Random thoughts on player leakage to other galaxies in MP

Do you think the void between galaxies should inhibit jump based FLT travel?

So, one of the main issues in multiplayer seems to be an utter lack of player interaction. After all why fight for X area when you can just wander off and harvest somewhere else without spending the resources to defend a claim? Much less puttering off to an entirely different galaxy at the drop of a hat.

So my random idea was this: What if void space between galaxies had an innate jump inhibitor effect that forced any crossing to be STL only? If it, combined with whatever else is planned for the void, can help slow player leakage enough it may allow a critical mass of players to remain in the core galaxy without being a wall that prevents all player movement past a certain point. Plus if you can't simply jump from danger and help can't simply arrive in the blink of an eye well, then you better be prepared to deal with whatever crops up in the dark voids of space.

The way Navigation works in Elite Dangerous is that it requires a big mass of a stellar body to lock onto... Perhaps a Void sector causes a ship to take 2x or more longer to charge its jump drive. or otherwise mitigated.

I think it may have to be some sort of scaling Inhibitor field (As you suggested) to counter the "Chain Drives" though. This means that factions will brave the Void to make warpgates as infrastructure, which can be attacked, defended, blockaded, etc.

Or have it that you must use a "medium to large" vessel to pass through for a number of reasons... one to overpower the inhibitor field, etc.

Certainly sounds like an "OK" idea, not too radical at least :P

Interesting idea. However, the option should just be to restrict the game to one galaxy instead. This will decrease strain on MP memory and make "No leaving the galaxy" rules much easier to enforce. Namely by making it impossible to leave the galaxy.

Void sectors becoming dangerous is a neat touch...perhaps just have dark masses (Starless planets, extragalactic debris such as comets and asteroids) and stellar bodies in general, be dangerous to past at FTL speeds.
    As in, smash-you-back-to-subatomic-particles dangerous.
Meaning you must chart space out before crossing it as FTL speeds....or you risk death with every sector you cross. Perhaps just a chance to hit something in every sector you cross....a really high chance (Greater than 50%), but the chance would be reduced to 0% when you've visited and scanned a sector.

Could work and I know Schine has some thoughts to make void space more interesting. Main idea was to make it so you can't just go "LAWL" and bugger off to an entirely different galaxy on a whim. Then complain there's no interaction on the server as a result. :D

well if stations are charted as being classified or undiscovered be4 you get there, why not hide them entirely in the void sectors, as supposedly theres nothing out there. and have it like as in star trek 'the neutral zone',
so in the void sectors, maybe have sectors between faction territory even, make it so its very very hard with "enhanced" pirate stations, pirate convoys, pirate patrols, as though all the void sectors are pirate factioned, and they have a very very very very very high faction pool, like 2mil faction points
[DOUBLEPOST=1466383840,1466383663][/DOUBLEPOST]maybe there could be black holes dotted around too even, as they would be like jump inhibitors with atleast 1mil jump inhibitor effect
so if you get caught in one, you really cant escape, and they are like stars but not visible at all, and if you go past the event horizon, which could be 1 sector from it, you start to get compressed and theres no getting out, and there could be a "video" of your ship gettnig crushed to pieces
