Ok, like minecraft, this would be a train type idea, except that you'd mount a core to the rail. The core could be built on to be turned into a transport buggy to carry you through longer areas of your ship and stations. It could also be used as a planetary rail.

The build area would be limited to probably 7x7x7. Perhaps using a docking module as the rail device would allow for larger areas.

There are few prototypes of vehicles that are travelling via rail. You can check it out.

All these are moving on rails. You don't need for devs to introduce new stuff. You can do it Yourself :p
thats all well and cool but if they could be saved as a part of a ship then shared it would be better. the above methods work but they require a lot of planning and installing. i had this idea to create a fighter launch pad. based on what I've seen i know exactly how to do it but if i went through the trouble of actually building it, it would be just to show off. its practical applications would be extremely limited and i would hate to put in all this effort to only hav bragging rights.

i prefer to make things that ppl can use. the current blueprint system would not support those prototypes. i don't think you can even go to warp if you had it installed on your ship. the moving part might get left behind. some kind of rail/piston system that can be considered part of a ship rather than 2 ships connected via blocks would be better

This would be cool and all, but seeing as elevators were axed due to physics issues, wouldn't this be the same?

Still want it. Along with elevators. And chairs.

Being able to move blocks would mean you could put a gravity unit on any elevator or tram which would solve the problem the plex lifts had.

As a side note I think the real fun of rail systems would be the ability to build catapult launching systems for drones or fighters. Being able to have logic based queued launching would be so much more elegant than having to stick your drones to the outside of your ship because they aren't smart enough to make it out of any kind of hangar.

schema has said that we will get all sorts of movement blocks later on. If you like that kind of stuff (who doesn't?!) you will be really happy once we get them.

invariably we will probably get them in beta, just like minecraft. so the wait begins...

Ok, so I'm seeing the need for 2 kinds of blocks. 1 would be a rail system, something you could slide across over an extended distance, making turns along the way. The second would be piston like block. I would say make it either a telescoping piston that can go farther the more blocks are grouped, or make it more like a wench where there's a roll of something.

I think you could fit say 5 shells inside a block, and each block added would add 5 more blocks of distance to the extension. So you line up 3 blocks oriented the same direction and activating them would cause 5 shells to extend each 3 blocks long for a total of 15 blocks of extension. You'd be able to build a small unit attached independently to the end of the piston (docked as such, but no space requirement like regular blocks have). Each group of pistons would be able to move a certain amount of mass, so a larger item would require more pistons.

I'm thinking making it so you can build a crane with the two parts would bring it to near limitless potential.

Please don't make minecraft type mistake with it though.

A pivot block would be handy too. It could be a block that can meter resistance from 0 (no resistance) to 1 (full resistance) or be triggered by a signal to spin forward or backward. Anything that is connected to it will rotate freely on the same axis as the top middle. Attaching on the top or bottom will result in spinning behavior, while attaching it on the front or back will result in hinge like behavior.

All well and good (and pretty impressive btw), but you really need to be able to have them attached, not just looped and sliding.

All of those are awesome, I especially like the hangar door, but Jath is right. A collision enabled server would turn any of those into so much space confetti.
