Actually, forget about the plain slices, this is better for the now flat glowy panel. See how on top of the flat glowy parts there's a frame that looks like a cross interrupted at the center with a circle? Put that on top of your central flat glowy panel.
This is a vintage one. From the age of OldStyle.
It's spinning on a rotor, and it's ice over a layer of white hull. The edges of the white hull are replaced with lava. I originally tried Sintyr, but it looked like yellow snow.

I've done spinny engines before. Other way around, though.This may sound crazy.... but have you considered making all those "panels" that cover the blue glowy bits, a ship, dock it on a rotator, and make it spin in there? if you make it spin slowly it might add some life to the build.
