Hey guys, I was making an engine intake, and I wanted to know how it looked from the output of another person. if you could tell me what you think, that would be great...

It's okay, but all that monotonous grid stuff really doesn't work so well. I'd go with splitting that section into 4 or 6 slices and using the ice backlighting technique. (TODO: get a link to it.)

The floating rings, those will work well. Good depth. I might make the big one grey or white just to stand out a bit.

That might work, I'll give it a go...
[DOUBLEPOST=1436481395,1436480512][/DOUBLEPOST]Er, I changed a ring, but what in the world do you mean by "splitting that section into 4 or 6 slices and using the ice backlighting technique."

pulled the quotes from this thread.

This is a vintage one. From the age of OldStyle.
Actually, forget about the plain slices, this is better for the now flat glowy panel. See how on top of the flat glowy parts there's a frame that looks like a cross interrupted at the center with a circle? Put that on top of your central flat glowy panel.

Some stuff on the ice trick:
It's spinning on a rotor, and it's ice over a layer of white hull. The edges of the white hull are replaced with lava. I originally tried Sintyr, but it looked like yellow snow.

Not sure if this is the ice trick or not. If Comrade117 would like to explain how they did this that would be nice. Try doing this for each panel once you break up the big panel.

Hello my friends, please forgive me for being late to the party.
It is an ice trick, but on relatively small scale.

Explanation is in the attached picture, layer by layer.
I hope I am not too late, cheers. starmade-screenshot-0004.png

The black smothers the texture behind it, and ruins the depth put into the back. It looks flat instead of being multiple layers 5 or so deep.

This may sound crazy.... but have you considered making all those "panels" that cover the blue glowy bits, a ship, dock it on a rotator, and make it spin in there? if you make it spin slowly it might add some life to the build.

I've done spinny engines before. Other way around, though.
