In the event that planets became valuable resources to fight over, I have developed a cool strategy to defend them that utterly prevent the planet from being fire upon while still letting players through. The power of the plex door. If you had the time, as we all do, (have you seen the screenshot awesome section!?) you could create a dome of plex doors around the planet, and hook it up to shields and whatnot. Plex doors, when in open mode, allows players to pass through but not amc cannons or missiles or whatever. So if planets do became useful, and people do use this method to defend them, it will force attacking factions to airdrop droppods and vehicles down onto the surface, as larger ships would be too cumbersome to effectively attack through the plex shield. Hell, you could even close the door to screw people. With proper defences, and even a fleet, it would prevent the opposing faction from sticking around too long, forcing them to just drop and go. Maybe even planets could have an infinite power source at the core, streamlining planet defence, just hooking up shield generators and turrets to the core. Maybe Planets could have a use in generating blocks to build with or something cool like that. Any other ideas for planetary defence/attack and planet usefullness?

What if you needed to have a certain number of \"Control Points\" to maintain a sector? You could get Control Points by having planets under faction, having stations, and having ships in the sector. This could make factions have to take over planets and stations in order take control of a sector.

But what does having sector mean?

If you owned a sector, a certain amount of the profits shops in your sector make would go to you. You could only build stations if you owned a sector or if the sector was being contested with a certain amount of Control Points. You could also but mining laws and tolls when people pass though them. If they broke your sectors laws, you could hire the trading guild to send ships after them.

Shop credits are good. Trading guilds are good. Also being able to outfit your own trading guild to really enforce it. Also, a big enough D1000 battery can blow up entire planets. Theres ur nuke.

Edit: we need shield projectors/planetary shields so we don\'t have to spend time building a plex wall or whatever else.

I like this idea but first: planets must be strategicly useful. Maybe some kind of mining block requiring a lot of energy(100K per block?) that automaticly produces(not mines, so that it is an infinite source) ores(at a speed of maybe 1 level 1 every few seconds?) but only the ones found on the planet. The same could then also be done with asteroids.

And for control points, maybe have some kind of system like the galactic civilizations system where there is a building(block in this case) that produces control points and also produces some in surrounding sectors(Maybe like 5 per hours in the sector it is build, 3 for sectors that are up to 5 sectors away from it and 1 u to 10 sectors).

These ideas sound good. It would be cool to actually need planets, the only problem would be that raiding a homebase isn\'t effective. Hm, can that system be turned off on a server, to promote warfare?

Not yet sadly. But to make that you can\'t simply taje out someone main base easily in a blitz or all-out attack maybe also make that once a sector has a certain number of points produced from both inside and outside the sector, the bases there are protected or gets buffs(like stronger armor). Although, this would then create a problem of how to mke that there isn\'t siimply a fortress of like 3x3x3 sectors producing influence granting lots of buffs to each other.

I think it would be best if weapons cant shoot from space onto planet surfaces in the first place as this will both force and allow factions to use dropships.

I think that shields on planets and stations should have large buffs, but players should be able to break blocks and open doors on factioned objects. Then, power breakers and shield computers should be added, so players/npcs can land on planets in a dropship, sabotage the enemies shields, and then blast the planet from orbit.

I support the D1000 and planetary shield statements.

The planetary shield could have a time-gap.

    Should it also disable salvage?

It would prevent peoples from killing planets with AMCs, but how about missiles?

The shield could be bigger than atmosphere and repel big ships.

It could deflect projectiles fired from wrong angles, but let weak laser weapons pass.

This is an interesting idea. I think instead of using PlexDoors, there should be another kind of shield, that projects in a bubble, similar to how a docking module works. It could be less powerful per block, but would protect a planet better than normal shields.

But if you could attack a planet from space with your gigantic titan, who would risk their lives and credits to go onto the planet? The only way your idea could work is if planetary shields were invincible so you had to disable them from the surface first.

Maybe make that they don\'t absorb the damage, but reduce it. So maybe makethat if you have lots of shields, the damage of each shot gets reduced by 95% or theres a max damage that passes through. Therefore, bombarding it from space would take a long time, adding planetry defenses, even very costly.

hmm I still think it would be better to cancel out all shots as if they were \'absorbed\' by the atmosphere. This would also give another purpose to disintegrators as ships are able to pass through the shields, allowing for actual space bombardments.

So you mean that instead of using the standard weapons you would bombard with self-built torpedoes? that sounds like a good and balanced idea

I think PlexDoors would be laggy and ugly.

It would be cool to have lakes which are able to boil (killed ice turns to water turns to fog, turns to clouds, turns to rain, turns to water, turns to snow and ice - if the planet is cold enough - at their initial position.)

And rock would turn to lava, red rock to red rock lava, etc...

I would like fire-transparent blocks which look lava-like with damage overlays.

Instead of killing high-tech blocks, it would turn them to lava (damage-transparent) and then to something natural low-tech. Some ore, or something that can be found on planets.

Pled doors ARE laggy and ugly. The\'re also the only decent option, unless you want to coat it in hull. Glass could work. I like the idea of atmosphere blocking amcs, forcing disintegrater bombs. We could create actual bombs that would work with the planets gravity. Also, air dropping mechs and tanks is amazing.

EDIT: Bubble shields would work great, and maybe should be way less energy costly, amc resistant, and have higher shield hp totals, but be weak to disintegrators. I have a square plex shield with turrets on top that works great, with massive shields, and powerful turrets discouraging a ship to bombard it, especially with mine parked above. The best strategy is either to take out the opposing ship in a long and bloody war where you have the disadvantage, then to drop mechs and tanks of the planet below and retreat to a safe distance.
