This post will be updated at least once a day if not more, check back later for more as the ships are built. All information and designs are subject to change as I refine this faction.

So I decided to go with "Nightmares" as a faction name, gives it a mysterious feeling, while also something that other crews that see them might call them. (The faction itself is unknown, so no name can be given by themselves.) Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

    Design Guidelines

First some information about the general guidelines I'm following in the making of these ships. They will be comprised mostly of purple hull blocks, but will use red lights and red blocks in a few key locations, usually the front of the ships, they will be very sparse however. The ships will not have any exposed systems with exception to the end of the antimatter guns, the cockpit on some smaller ships, engines, and misc other non-function blocks used for decoration. The ships will make heavy use of diamond design patterns, and all ships will be more vertical in design than wide or long. Ships will follow a "ghost" naming convention. All finalized ships will have a high level of detail, polish, and have almost no "box" like elements.

    Ship Classification

I have looked at other community members guidelines for ship classification by scale and mass, and have found them inadequate, or downright unusable. So I am using my own classification system, one that pulls from Eve Online and a few other games as well as historical sea vessels. (Not to mention filling certain combat requirements.)

    Faction Information

These mysterious ships were spotted first appearing four months ago, they have been reported as emerging from swirling vortexes in space that appear randomly and without warning. These vortexes were first thought to have been a kind of wormhole, but under the few circumstances in which they have been studied, no wormhole like properties were found.

These ships attack every race and faction on sight, even engaging ships several times their size. As of today only six of these mysterious ships have been destroyed in engagements, largely due to their ability to simply escape into the vortexes from which they come from, and no other object seems to be able to pass through. One of the the most bizarre aspects of these ships in that they do no salvage or claim any ship or station they overpower. However the crew, and in fact any life aboard simply disappears. Either being destroyed or abducted by the attackers, noone knows for sure.

The unknown ships have been increasing their incursions into known space in recent weeks, with larger and larger classes of ships being spotted, with vastly increasing threat to those they come across. Efforts are being made to learn more about the invaders, but so far no real breakthroughs have been discovered with either capturing a vessel or understanding how the vortexs work.

    Ships

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Spirit (Fighter)

The first of the mysterious fighters was spotted by a trade convoy as they passed what they described as "A great swirling whirlpool in space." the Spirit emerged and opened fire on the convoy with the convoy nearly losing one of their ships before engaging their warpdrives and escaping. One of the pilots commented that he had never seen a fighter class ship with so much firepower before.

    Hanger: None

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Apparition (Bomber)

The Apparition class bomber was first seen in a group of three emerging from a space anomoly near a economic trade station, they immediately proceeded to open fire on all vessels in sight overcomming four trade vessels and a miliatry corvette before military reinforcements arrived and the Apparitions disappered back through the anomoly. When the crippled trade vessels were checked, it came as a suprise to all when one of the ships was found devoid of any crew.

    Weapons: Unknown
    Hanger: None

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Ghost (Corvette)

A Ghost class corvette sighting is commonly followed by a trail of ship hulls mysteriously devoid of any crew or life. It is theorized that these mysterious ships are abducting all crew abord the ships they overpower, for what purpose is unclear.

    Ship Information:
    Mass: Unknown
    Shields: Unknown
Weapons: Reported to have 8 micro turret hardpoints, in addition to unknown primary weapons.
    Hanger: None

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Specter (Frigate)

    High Resolution Screenshot - http://s24.postimg.org/y0yayhbxh/Specter_Frigate.jpg

A Specter class frigate was reported to be the first of these mysterious ships to actually attack a military installation with an escort of a Ghost class corvette and three Spirit class fighters. The installation with the help of a nearby military patrol was able to fight off the assault with considerable loss to military vessels in the process. This also marks the first time that a mysterious vessel was destroyed, with one of the Spirt class fighters being completely destroyed in the battle, but at the cost of two fighters and two corvettes to the defending military fleet. Due to this engagement militaries across the galaxy began increasing patrol sizes.

    Ship Information:
    Mass: Unknown
    Shields: Unknown
Weapons: Reported to have 18 micro, and 4 small turret hardpoints, in addition to unknown primary weapons.
Hanger: Hanger space for one Spirit class fighter.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Shade (Destroyer)

    High Resolution Screenshot - http://s24.postimg.org/o3hwhnyt1/Shade_Destroyer.jpg

The Shade class Destroyer was discovered only from found recordings in a trade convoy graveyard found in deep space after a recieved SOS. The recordings showed the destroyer emerging right next to the convoy via one of their whirlpools and laying waste to the convoy and their two corvette class escorts in a matter of seconds. However the recording did show something not seen before, a red beam emitting from the front of the destroyer and fired on each of the destroyed and crippled ships after the battle. What came as a suprise to those who had upto now, assumed these ships were taking the crew of their defeated victims, was that after close analasys of the video, the beam appeared to send something into each of the ships, rather than remove anything from them. This has only made the matter of the attacks all the more more mysterious,

"And with terror I stared into the great swirling abyss before us, and from it emerged the very incarnation of horror and despair given form, it was truely not of this world, for upon it's arrival space seemed to ripple as if the very stars themselves cried out in fear. And after a flash of azure violet, nothing remained of our great armada, that had dared to stand before it, but the few lifepods of us who had escaped it's gaze."

I am still looking for a name that really fits this faction, needs to have a fear inducing name, think ghosts, monsters, mysterious, etc. Make a suggestion below.

Ooh, I like the story to go along with your ships. Very nice design by the way, different. :)

I can think of a few faction names, but it depends if the faction name is what the faction calls itself, or what terrified pilots who stumble upon them, call them.

Considering the story for the faction I have in mind. (It\'s just about done, I\'m typing the last of it in word and proofreading it now before adding it.) It should be what people who have encountered their ships would call them.

Ok, basic background story added, and the \"Under construction\" Shade class Destroyer screenshot added. Think thats it for me today, more tommorow, hopefully a finished destroyer and animation to add then, as well as more ship information across the board.

You laugh about \"sanshas\" but I originally planned to make the ships spikey, sadly the limitations of the blocks prevented decent looking spikes on anything smaller than a battleship, and even then they were questionably spikes. If the developers improve the block shapes (For christ sake, why don\'t we have wall facing corner blocks yet?) then I may make an entirely new faction thats sansha-like with a red/black block theme when this one is done.

Anyway, still havn\'t quite heard a name that clicks yet, but thanks to both of you for throwing some suggestions out there.

Shade class destroyer completed and I\'ve begun testing on the shape of the hull for the Phantom class cruiser. These will start taking longer with each class, due to each ship being between 2x and 3x the size of the ship class below it.

It might help if we had thier story to see and base names off of.

    EDIT:

This might be of some use:

    I cannot read apparently.

Yeah... was going to say, the story is there, both a main story background, and additional information given via each ship along a timeline.

    Nightmare.

Simple, fits your spooky, purple, and almost covenant-ish building style, and easily translated into any language unlike proper nouns.

\"Admiral, you\'re needed at the aft bridge immediately.\"

The sleek curvature of the Advent Victory\'s intertwined gunmetal-grey metal plates glows a calming blue as it\'s ion particle thrusters burn at maximum power, energizing the space around them. Shaped vaguely like a cross with a semi-circle running along it\'s top quarters and sweeping forward agressively, the Advent Victory\'s impressive kilometer-long frame holds tens of devastating warships within it\'s expansive internal docks. Over 500 people live aboard, relying on their metal cage to keep them alive.

\"The Operator has us moving away from the anomaly at flank speed...\"

The ship passes a clump of asteroids, each of them larger than most buildings, but appearing small before the Advent Victory. Miners and scavengers would occasionally visit sites such as these, taking resources for their own use or setting ambushes for other, less fortunate fortune seekers. Now it lies lifeless, an untapped wealth hiding in the vast emptiness of space. The Advent Victory strafes to the side and puts the asteroids directly behind it.

\"...And is working with comms to hail nearby stations.\"

The front of the Advent Victory bristles with weaponry; 15k millimeter cannons that fire projectiles with enough precision and power to wipe out a city while orbiting. A gauntlet of point defense turrets await the tresspass of hostile bombers, while the larger broadside turrets promise to turn larger warships into baleful memories.

\"The Schemadyne delegate is ignorant of the threat, and we can\'t find a match in the databanks.\"

The quad Bundium reactors present inside the ship effortlessly change matter to energy and vice versa in order to sate the beast\'s insatiable hunger for raw power. Tiny amounts of antimatter collide with their material equivalents and the explosive and unstable fruits of their labor travel along superheated pipes to where they\'re needed.

    \"Whatever it is, it\'s gaining on us.\"

The admiral leans out of bed clumsily and runs his hand through his hair. \"...Interrupted my damn sleep.\"
He gets up and quickly dresses, only paying half attention to the steady stream of reports coming in from various personnel.

Upon sensing his biosigns a sliding door lets him out into the officer\'s hall. His room fits snugly between the chief engineer\'s and first mate\'s.

He made for the closest elevator with an obvious lack of spring to his step, but halfway there he is stopped.
\"Admiral, sir, take a look!\" where a viewport looking out to the ship\'s aft used to be is a small croud of various high-ranking crew members outlined by mixed fear and morbid curiosity. On his command they quickly part and the admiral gets a clear look at the ano-

The admiral blinks as a wave of pure disgust clouds his senses. The light coming through the viewport shifts from a faint blue to an intense green for an instant.

Behind the Advent Victory, a great darkness exists. For a moment it is punctured by a bright green light that travels along it\'s ethereal nothingness, shining through the blackness but not on it. The light jabs violently about before making a beeline for the Advent Victory. It\'s impact causes the massive ship to shudder.

Combat alarms turn on, and the croud gathered at the viewport quickly disperses to their respective stations. The admiral takes another second to study the lack of stars, reminded of a patch of dark, dead nebula he once encountered, too small to begin creating stars.

Another green light arcs across the formless abyss and disappears from view. At it\'s passing, the admiral cannot help but feel waves of intense ire and distrust... No... Hate and dusgust. He doesn\'t need to know what it is. He only needs to hate it.

The wailing alarm eventually distracts him from his trance. He\'s needed on the bridge. There\'s no time to... Do whatever he was doing.

Every time he passes a viewport he can\'t help but steal a glance at the shapeless mass of pure black chasing his ship, clenching his jaw at the dread weight in his gut that forms when the mysterious green lights dance along the clouds.

The admiral reaches the aft-most bridge much later than he should. He looks about at his crew, frightened and confused but nonetheless trying to remain in control. A captain dutifully relinquishes control to him, and he sits in the seat reserved for the acting captain. His seat turns to face forward as he enters a code of numbers into a console that clings to the chair\'s armrest.

Directly ahead of him lies the blackness at the rear of the ship. No stars, no nebulae. Screens show a wide array of blank sensor readings as radiation disappears upon nearing it.

The ship\'s operator sends in another pressing report, \"Admiral, I\'ve ordered all Bundium overflow into the thrusters. They\'re straining but IT sped up to match.\"

A thrashing faerie of nausiating green light flickers into existence, collecting itself from several smaller lights before slamming itself into the Advent Victory\'s thick hull.

\"Are all weapons platforms operational!?\" The admiral barks, his face blushing as another sickening green assault begins.

    A nearby technician replies, \"Yes sir.\"

    \"Then fire! Pelt the area!\"

    \"Sir, shouldn\'t we wait for a firing solutio-\"

\"For what? You want a firing solution? That way!\" The admiral furiously points in the direction of the darkness that grows upon them. \"Shoot it!\"

Several crew members glance at each other uneasily. \"Sir, I believe it\'s only testing our shield strength. I don\'t think taking immediate hostile action is the-\"

The admiral\'s steel glare jabs into the technician, silencing her prematurely.

Outside, the Advent Victory is nearly enclosed in the darkness and green lights dance about it, occasionally splashing against it\'s hull, being abosrbed by shields. When the open fire command is given without any specified target it\'s turrets come to life. Point defense turrets fire bright lines of tracers, illuminating small patches of darkness but failing to dispel it. The larger broadside turrets fire their enormous shells in volleys, each one a rolling, resounding \'BOOM!\' that causes the entire ship to vibrate. A massive rush of missiles is launched from the Advent Victory, heading in every direction.

The bombardment proves fruitless until the last of the Advent Victory\'s missiles disappear into the black.
A dumbfired missile impacts something solid and detonates, and it\'s shockwave causes nearby missiles to destroy themselves in a chain reaction massive enough to filter light from behind the wall of darkness.
    ...
The Advent Victory\'s turrets go silent and it\'s thrusters dim. Several decks away, an engineer in a dark room tries to report that power is lost.
    ...
The light from the missiles dim, but the clear outlines they etch never leave.

    Alvis:

Thanks, as the ships get bigger I can put more detail into them, which should make them look more sinister. I\'m thinking red glowing eyes for the cockpit like I did on the destroyer, and eventually almost giant mouths on the biggest ships like carriers, dreads, and titans when I can add that much detail to them, basically making them \"vaguely\" look like a distorted evil face from the front. Or something like that. I spend a good hour each day sketching out possible shapes for the hulls, I want interesting, but completely original.

As for the spikes, they may well make it in for battleships and above, if I can get them looking right. If not, like I said, can always make a new race for them later.

    Mr. Furb:

You know it\'s actually not bad. I had originally passed on that name as I wanted to use it for one of the ships names. But it\'s looking like I may not at this point, there is only one ship I\'m considering adding to the current lineup, and thats a mothership. But I\'m not sure yet. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think a great name that might be given to this faction by terrified victims is this

    The Omen

    or just Omen

    or Black/Dark Omen

but the \"Omen\" concept seems quite fitting :D
