First, let me post some quick fusion360 sketch,
The front and back of the block, this block is directional, one input one output
And when they are put side by side with same direction for the output
output will join together, input still separate.
So it creates a bigger beam by combining different barrels
Also it reflect bounds back the beam and because the beam have been reflected
it will last longer in air than shootout directly. So the beam will form a blade
if CD time is balance, with well tune logic setup
Since it can be C,V, lets use this to output a logic sign when something pass through the muzzle
(Recognized - Firing a Weapon Outputs a Logic Signal)
And here is the 3d model of the sketch: http://a360.co/2cFg2dV

Then C-V them together
And the blade function can be connect like this, pair by pair

There is nothing can't fix in starmade with more computer and C-V system.I like this. I often wish the thruster plume was treated the same way.
To make that work, you would need some kind of logic built into the way the game handles the orientation and connectivity of the block itself, so it knows to change the shape of the aperture. Unless you use some other kind of trickery.
Then C-V them together
And the blade function can be connect like this, pair by pair
