I was recently on a sever and I had asked a admin on there to move my space station closer to my planet. He responded with "no you will have to move it manually". So is that even possible?

Yes, it is possible. The admins on the server I play on are usually very helpful as long as one follows the rules. In fact, IIRC, it even specifically says to ask an admin to help you move your station to make sure it is in the centre of your sector.

Moving closer to a planet sounds more laggy though. How close did you want to be?

In theory you could just save the blueprint and respawn it in at your desired location bit of a hazzle but probably the best and only way if the admins are too lazy to help you.
But as Mouse is saying it's best if you avoid having a station close to a planet, at least if your station is the size of or bigger than the planet since planets already take enough performance.
