A kickstarter would get money for the game, but more importantly, more people would actually know this game exists and is not the same game that was shown once on a popular youtube channel a year ago. People would actually start coming back, and the thing this game needs is a community.
A community drives a game, and a large community is always good IMO.
Well, as much as I think Starmade needs some more players, I quite like the small community. Everyone knows everyone. (almost) :)

This game is in alpha, and more random people finding it will not help at this poit .

When we get closer to feature complete I would support this idea - but not now.

Personally I am for it, but I can respect the reasons why NOT to do it..

On the one hand, you have funding and the potential to hire another coder or two and really take the game off and going

On the other hand, you have a lot more people to nitpick, a lot more expectations, and a tiny bit of pride lost for having to do a kickstarter.. though I don't personally agree with that, I can understand it.

Regardless this game is pretty fantastic.. I mean, it has needs, big time, but it's an alpha, and its free, so we literally have ZERO room to complain or moan or gripe about anything!

One thing I think the game could use that may or may not need a new team-member.. Some kind of story element. I know I am a little off topic but hey it does kinda apply, since we're talking about funding.

Its a procedural game, so it can't have a linear story line, but something like Minecraft's dungeons/strongholds and then the whole dynamic with the Nether / End would be good. I mean, we're not talking adding dimensions here, this is not that kind of game, but there could be some kind of rare-ish things to find on planets that could start a chain of events that it semi random and has a custom fleet or w/e, culminating in fighting like a boss-clone of your own ship or something. Idk super super rough random off the wall ideas, none of which will happen, but just throwing it out there so you know approximately what I mean..

Anyhoo.. If you start a kickstarter, I will contribute, if not, I'll contribute from here as well :)

Schema is crazy, in the good way, but i think he have his reasons for not make one promotion campaign for Starmade.
As far as I have heard, the dev team is waiting to promote the game until a later time, such as after alpha. I don't know when it will be for sure, but for now there are some of us within the community (such as Bench and myself) who are taking it upon ourselves to produce different types of trailers for the game.

So promotion isn't something which isn't being considered for the game, it's simply that the team is waiting for just the right time. For the time being though I'm more than happy to help create content to promote the game. As players we not only help shape the game, but also help to drive the dev's. This isn't done by demanding new updates and changes, but by showing them the things we're doing with the game, and how much we're enjoying it. So get out there and have fun spacers!

To you lot suggesting we advertise more: What we don't need is another Yogstrain-grade influx of people on a game that, frankly let's admit it, isn't fit for release yet.

What we need is dosh. Big fat green (Or whatever colour cash is in Deutchland) stacks of cash, lolly, moolah, WONGA. And, then maybe we could hire some bodies to work on the game! Then we advertise. All good in the hood!

Well as far as I've understood Schema wants to keep the team fairly small, and he already works on it pretty much full-time. So I'm not sure what more money would accomplish. I'm not shooting the idea down, just saying I'm not sure how much it would help. If it's just a matter of help though I'd be down for offering my graphics/3D skills to help, but like I said Schema has a small, but very capable team right now. Not sure if he needs/wants others joining up. Might become a "too many cooks in the kitchen" kind of thing you know?

The schine engine is 10 years of schema's life. He's prolly jump in a 10 foot vat of green jell-o rather than allow anyone access to it. Or at the very least he'd weigh mortal cessation by flavored collogen against his hard work. No.. the fewer people with hands in the code the better. We'll have modding and LUA on top of all the other stuff the game already lets us change. And it'll be epic. Once Star-Made itself is good and ready... You'll see.

All I can think of is an angry garden gnome holding a shotgun, saying your post in a lucky charmes-esque accent: "any dirty code teeves will hav'ta get past ol' TINSY forst! Loike there's no T'morro!"

And people STILL being scared of it.

I looked at the Euro to GBP converter, one 1500 Euro note will net you a solid gaming PC here 0_o Mind you, in Zimbabwe you can be a millionaire and still be slum poor.

    Best reason 2014

I am sure a kickstarter would not be necessary. I was under the impression players would donate however once the game got going or bought the pre-release thing. Basically all we should be doing is making sure what is here is great. Once it hits beta or goes public it will already have a great website, a database of ships and active communities. It will take off much faster if we keep this going.

Basically: DO NOT STOP, DO NOT SLEEP. CONTENT. CONTENT. CONTENT... o_O

Paranoid? :p Better a bit too much than a bit too few.

But I know from experience that the hardest thing is to find your own errors.

Getting another set of eyes with unique ideas on the code would be good. They could find issues that schema can't pin down, come up with more efficient ways of doing things, and let schema take a break. Stuff gets done much quicker when you have someone to bounce ideas off of and work together to come up with ways to do things.

Thinking about it jumping into a 10FT vat of green jelly might be a good laugh. Sounds fun, I'll keep the idea around for Red Nose Day.

Still, I don't think Schema is paranoid and yes there is a risk that someone could nick some engine stuff. But we'd recognise a game made from the engine and would straight away kick up some sand. And on the too many cooks thing, yes having a team of 30 people would be excessive, but I'm not thinking about that, I'm thinking of full-time bug squishers and maybe 1 or 2 extra programmers so the man himself does not have to work 7-10 hours every single day. He lost a friend and lots of his time on this game, I'm sure we all agree that he deserves the privilege of watching it grow, with mind and sanity intact. :p

Just enough to take the load of, you know? Division of labour in making this 'pin'.

With a extra person helping developing the game it will get developed faster, the other person can work on one thing and schema can work on the other things. Schema can have a break on Sunday and socialise with people and play starmade online and see how this game is going.

Yes, but only as long as schema can thrust this person.

With LUA-extensions it may partially become possible.
