Hello all,
I was shipping several "Products" that my space company produces to a customer just yesterday when I got a sudden flash of awesome. The server I have been playing on, along with many other servers, have warp gates going to other galaxies on the server. I thought it would be awesome to incorporate what I call the "Multiverse". The multiverse makes outer Galaxies gateways to other servers. Let me give you an example, You are the CEO of an aspiring and growing corporation. You sell bada** space cruisers that are loaded with all the bells and whistles. But, there aint much of a market on your current server. You are already firmly established on your current server and cant take the time to restart on a new server. This is where the multiverse comes in. You pull out the galaxy map and find that there are many more players in the galaxy or server next to you. So you pop a warp gate open to that galaxy and start spreading business over several galaxies.
So let me lay out how I think this should work technically.
There would have to be a sort of DNS server to define the location of each servers galaxy on one universal galaxy map. Once a server comes online, it requests its position in the universal galaxy map from this DNS server. From that point all galaxy maps on all integrated servers would be updated to include this new entry.
Once a player crosses into a foreign galaxy, the players character data is sent to the server he is crossing into so that when he arrives everything he brought with him is carried over. Now, this players data on the new server is temporary, if he returns to his native server the data from the server in which he left will be deleted. This is to conserve storage across all servers.
Tell me if you guys think its a good idea!
Hit me up with questions so that we can make it better.
