So it occurred to me when I was watching the trailer for the second time that the default character skin for both Starmade and Minecraft are both masculine presenting models with "boy" names. I then started thinking about the representation of character in popular sandbox games and how it relates to the rest of the gamer world.
Now I have spoken out before about sexism and representation in gaming but I have never thought of this genera because I never considered the default character model really important. But watching the trailer and seeing the entire universe populated with masculine characters, it struck me. That was a huge message I think, and while I don't think it is intentional, the message I got out of that is that the default demographic this game is targeting is boys and men. To have a character that resembles you in someway you have to create your own skin or go download one. Further more the skin tone of dave is white. So now we have an idea of an entire universe populated with white guys. While I don't assume the erasure of other demographics is malevolent or intentional, I certainly think it has an exclusive affect. I think it would be beneficial and more inclusive if there were other default skin options. The uniforms don't need to change or anything, just the gender identity and skin color options. I think as it stands right now the trailer just made it look like a universe of white dudes and thats kind of silly.
