so what you're saying is one planet is all you need - then what's the point of exploring?
I did not say or imply that, or otherwise make that assertion in any way, shape, or form.

There is a problem with planets right now - they are too rich in resources compared to asteroids, leading players to shred entire planets with massive salvage arrays while turning their noses up at the meager yields of asteroids. This results in asteroids being under-appreciated as sources of resources and tends to result in a lot of pulverized planets. Hopefully the universe update will do something about this crap, but the last thing we need is to increase the ore value of planets if we want people to settle them.

what planets need is something that nothing else can get and also planets need to grow.

they also need to lower the gravity's affect on ships as well, it would be nice to actually get a ship down onto the planet where your base may be and land, or land and colonize!

I think the gravity effect on ships should stay the same so people have to land landing ships

Instead of minerals growing back, how about mining equippment not destroying them? Specialized mining equippment, along the lines of quarries, could produce materials a lot slower than salvagers, but in exchange the minerals remain in the ground to be mined over and over again. This could help turn planets into long-term supply sources, and away from the enlarged asteroids they are in the current gameplay.

That's what we have the stop effect for now. We do need some sort of landing block that will withstand collisions of up to 2 m/s. Above that it will just decrease the impact, until it gets a speed of over 4 m/s where it just causes normal damage.

holy shit no the gravitational influence of planets is drastically lower than it should be as is.

like, i can't even perform an orbital drop unless I'm 20 blocks away from the planet. that's wack, yo

The gravity is strong enough, but it doesn't update until you get really close.

well i think planet size has an affect on the planets gravity as well, since i've discovered naturally occurring city's on planets i've been trying to explore them to find a larger planet has a much greater gravitational force than smaller ones

gravity on planets is based on the height of the surface. if u build a skyscraper on a planet the planets gravity well will extend to the hight of said tower.

    Gravity is too strong.
    Core Mining planet/station block.

And... cookies ;p (and a way to turn off atmospheres, and higher LOD options in the game config)

with my recent discovery of city's on certain types of planets I have come to the conclusion they are worth owing as a factory location and also a good place to build planet side base's. They also seem to offer more resources per block than I originally anticipated.
