    Hi there,

since i asked this question in chat and noticed that i am not the only one who thinks travelling in space without a ship takes way too long, i decided to make a thread about it.

Big ships take big place to land and dock - so even on the landing platforms it needs so much time to get from a to b.
The only idea i came up with is to put teleporters and build blocks everywhere... but i dont wanna do this.

    • Use gravity lifts (currently fastest way of travelling) - but that means u need to take care of the logic and u need some departure areas in hallways. The main problem here for me is that there is only one direction possible - if other players want to use it they need to wait for their direction.

    • The funny sit/stand "glitch" - just rapidly shoot sit/stand. Because u are resetting at the block u aim at u always jump to the next position
    • JetPacks - Like a single core, but as limitation that u still need to build ships u take collision damage
    • Use rails with many cores docked - They all go around - and via logic stop for a while to enter/exit
    • Use much teleporters and build blocks all over the station :(
    • My favorite: Escalators/boosters like the ones u can see at airports :) that would look pretty cool also

I wish we had the ability to sprint when in a gravity field and on the ground. Walking feels too slow.

Actually, you are sprinting; there's a key to switch to walking speed, for me it's left shift but I have probably customized it that way, you can look it up in the game settings or in keyboard.cfg.

If you want a way to get around, have you looked at Star Wars? Those gravsleds running around are excellent for use as a transport mechanism. All you have to do is have a monorail setup; have a logic-based speed controller that has two settings: off, and on fast. The cart is basically decorative, with seats on it; the rail speed controller is linked by logic (Is that possible? I've not checked) to the cart (wireless) and many stop stations. It automatically runs around in the same direction until you stop it. To get around it, you cross the rails. Don't get nailed. You can even have several carts on there. It wouldn't be a very difficult thing to do. The logic is quite a mess depending on how it has to be built, but hey, it'll work. You'd need one per level, unless you want to rig some fancy smartaleck system to run it up a wall for an elevator ... which I don't.

Harry Potter doesn't have elevator - oh wait, I remember the telephone booth. And yeah, the ones in the Ministry.
And I don't want one. What a pain to build, to logic, to - EVERYTHING ELSE.
    But yeah, it'd be neat.

Hey, the Harry Potter elevators would work (Reach high speed) if you only have one destination in mind, and one way to get there. (Bottom floor, falling REALLY fast after undocking the elevator car).

But yeah, a trolley/hoversled method would be great. I'll probably build one on any larger crew/RP-based ships I make.

    This is what I use.

I call it a "Quick Transit System," which is basically a very long arm entity which is attached to a rail rotator. It spins VERY FAST at the outside edge, inside of a large circular hallway. In this example, I'm using wireless logic to transmit the rotate signal, but the buttons can also be on the base, so long as they don't clip through the entity.

Ive not played much with moving fast through a station yet, but what about having multiple gravity blocks? Say the right side of the hallway shoots you down in that direction only? and you stop at the end and "normal" gravity is enabled? couldn't that work? as you wouldn't have to worry about 2 players trying to go opposite directions with the same gravity tunnel?

aah yes - with trigger areas that would simplyfy the logic stuff^^ I was stuck at the enter-exit logic for a both way tunnel, it ended in a stressed quit
But i would still prefer escalators because of the ugly fall over...

Escalator and slidewalk blocks would be fun to have...

I tend to put transporters everywhere. I've been known to pull a President Skroob and transport one room away rather than walk.

I don't bother with that kind of hilarity. If I build interiors, dangit, I walk around and enjoy them.
Unless it's my Republic Frigate, then you can't get between compartment areas without transporters. I needed more systems space.

I am now imagining a station, where you have a main room, and ALL the rooms are summoned by button to the single doorway. In space you don't travel to rooms, rooms travel to you !

Though somehow I think my image is not the same as what you meant.

So, instead of turbolifts, each room is itself a turbolift...this actually has potential!

It would be interesting if, when aligning to rails, the astronaut started sliding along the rails, just like a docked entity, as if it (the rail) were a moving walkway. Maybe in a later update....

I find this far more amusing than what I should.... That GIF though

Thank you so much. My brain is now stuck trying to figure out how to set up the logic and rail systems for this.

I think we definitely need a faster method of player movement (actual running, not just an aggressive walk)

In addition, "airport conveyor belts" would be very useful. Literally have them be a moving texture which could look just like rails but move the player (or maybe even items too?) in the direction they face. The cool thing about these is that you could use them in wedges too to make escalators!

Finally a "hover block" would be nice. They could allow for ships to exist within the gravity of another ship, planet, or station but hover maybe 1/4th of a block high off the the structure. Maybe also have a "jump" button so entities could traverse obstacles or stairs.

Rails functioning as an airport-style people-mover actually sounds like a really good idea. Someone make a suggestion topic for that...
