I'm just curious. What's a generally accepted guide to classifying ships?

    I'm told mine's a Corvette. :P

I\'m not sure if there\'s anything official but I\'d assume Corvettes are smaller, quicker, weaker. Frigates are like larger, much more powerful. a cruiser is like strong, and quick

Depends on how much guns they have and how big they are

Cruiser would be something huge lots of weapons, sluggish, tons of shields

Frigate would be something with missiles, cannons, Large but not huge

Corvette would be the fighter craft which protects the main fleet when need be

I\'ll find you a link to it, its the most widely accepted scale of ship classifications but it recently got buried under new topics in general, ill be back with a link.

    * puts on miner\'s hat*

    edit: found it http://star-made.org/content/blitzwings-guideline-ship-classifications

so for example when i refer to my dreadnaught, im telling you my ship is between 4,000 and 10,000 mass.

    Edit 2 : while i prefer Blitzwing\'s list, there are 2 others,

nameless\'s: http://star-made.org/content/nameless-guide-ship-classifications still based on mass

and the Calbiri scale: http://star-made.org/content/calbirian-complexity-scale This one is based on the size of the ship\'s .sment file as in, the total space it\'s lines of code take up on your computer.

Bah, I say! Everyone seems to forget two things: 1) Ship classifcation is relative, changing from navy to navy and era to era. 2) Ship classifaction is both role and hull dependent.

Example: The United States Littoral Combat Ship is not a corvette, despite being roughly corvette-sized. Why? Because 1) They didn\'t want to classify that way and 2) It\'s role is not the one associated with corvettes in the post WWII era despite being of similar size.

Same for Starmade: You decide what your ship\'s classification is and if someone tells you you\'re wrong, then they are idiots concerned with imposing their own half-assed and entirely arbitrary sense of order on someone who neither wants nor requires it.

ok generally corvettes are divided into two classes, bomber corvettes and anti-fighter corvettes. the bomber corvettes tend to have tons of captain controled missiles, and maybe 2 or 3 small AMC turrets sufficient to deter fighters. A good example of an anti-fighter corvette is the correlian corvette, with its 8 antifighter turrets. it is very fast as well able to outrun many speedy capital ships.

I use this for docking purposes. As far as actual ship size/purpose based classification systems, I think it\'s way too early in the game\'s life to come up with a solid system. The best possible classification system would be one based around specific configurations of ship sizes/modules/weapons that have proven to fulfill an important role in faction combat, and the game isn\'t nearly finished or balanced enough yet for those stereotypes to emerge. Until it is, trying to standardize a ship classification system is wasted effort.

Depending on how much better it sounds.

    Multi-Gun Corvette Vs Multi-Gun Destroyer.

    It works for me.

That\'s the only ship classification I use. But it is purely superficial - my biggest ship so far blows the largest class clear out of the water for size and performance. Besides, there is no CLEAR distinction between ship classes. You can make one from 1 block to 5 million blocks in size and anything in between. If you make a ship that is 99.999 blocks should it class with ships less than 100k? It will perform almost as well if not just as well as a ship slightly larger in a higher class...

For the record - ships are classed based on size AND purpose. A Corvette is a destroyer of sorts but it\'s much smaller than an actual Destroyer. It\'s smaller than a Frigate which is smaller than a Destroyer.

Eitherway, both are pretty insignificant when compared against carriers or \'\'titans\'\' - motherships, for game purposes up to 1km in length.

Nameless\'s ship classification is/was the most used one, for having sense and including bigger size categories too...

Ship classification is build / configuration dependent. The most ambiguous ship class being the Frigate aslong as there is somthing larger and slower to compate it to any ship could be a Frigate. a Crusier and a frigate would be the same mass while a Crusier would have more shielding and weaponry while the Frigate would have more engine or perhaps you have a ship that is 100,000 blocks with half of it being slavagers. .... sound like a battleship to me.

Well, classifying ships has always been a rather imprecise art. Different people like to classify their ships differently, and with any classification system, there will always be ships that don\'t exactly fit.

In the real world, (sea-going) ships are classified in two ways; total tonnage, and the intended use of the vessel. So in starmade, I tend to go about classifying ships is by their total mass, and their intended role.

It\'s not as easy as it sounds, however.

For example, you might get several different fighters intended for several different roles. One may be intended to deter other fighters and protect slower, heavier ships, such as bombers. This would be an Escort fighter. You might also have another fighter, one that\'s designed for taking out bombers. This would still be classifed as a fighter, but it would also fall under the sub-catagory of an Inteceptor.

All clasiffications are arbitrary thing really.

And generally speaking, they doesn\'t matter much - in the end all matters if it is fun to fly around in ship you build (or downloaded), if it looks cool and if it is good in battle, unless it is just salvager.

meh i have designs on paper for a heavy fighter-bomber (dual AMCS and lock-on missiles) a heavy bomber (literally 9 lock-on missiles connected to 2 computers) a medium stealth fighter-bomber (3 AMC arrays and 2 lock-on missiles) a medium fighter-bomber (5 AMCS and 4 missiles) a kamikaze with no weapons(18 disintegrators) a heavy fighter (7 AMCS) an interceptor made to be shoved into a carrier(2 AMCS) a super-heavy fighter (2 AMCS) a heavy dps fighter (1 AMC) a heavy stealth bomber (1 AMC 4 missiles) 3 different heavily sheiled unarmed transports, a super-heavy bomber with 5 epic lock-on missiles, a super fighter-bomber (8 AMCS 10 lock-on missiles), and thats pretty much it.

please note that by super-heavy etc. i mean how big it is and how much it can take before your screwed over.

and most of the amc/missile arrays have just 4-8 blocks in them to save space.

http://starmade.wikia.com/wiki/Ship_Classification is the Starmade ship classification.

I personally use Star Wars classification, meaning that I don\'t even break corvette size until I\'m over 100m long. That also means that my ships tend to be large, which is bad considering my GPU is like 10 years old. Anyways I like the wiki\'s fighter classification, but after that I seem to have my own rules, and different classes. You essentially choose what you feel is right, you can use prexisting classification systems from fictional universes or the wiki\'s...or you can make your own. :D

    EDIT: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Capital_ship

    List of my classification.

But it seems to taper off at the end. I made a ship 358m long with 1.2mm blocks. Its certainly not the largest class I\'ve made, and I only call it a destroyer.
