can't start the game because the launcher goes white when I hit update.

I'm pretty sure java is update, and the game hasn't done this before.

    What launcher are you using?

    Steam launcher:

    Java launcher:

If you're using the Steam launcher, we can take a look at the logs. Right click on StarMade in the Steam library > Properties > General > SET LAUNCH OPTIONS... > enter '--verbose' (without the ') into the text box > OK

Once you've done this, start the game as normal, press update, when it crashes, go to Steam\steamapps\common\StarMade and upload the launcher.log file here.

    I'm using the first one
    [doublepost=1492442269,1492440847][/doublepost]this is the log
[doublepost=1492442320][/doublepost]there's a lot of "does not exist" in there, I re-downloaded the game, purged it numerous times and then re-installed.

Could you run the launcher from the command line and provide me with the output?
(Rarely, the Electron platform that the launcher is built atop throws warnings/errors/exceptions, and I'm currently unable to catch and log these, so in your case, launcher.log doesn't provide a clear picture of what happened.)

You can find the command prompt by searching for it on the start menu. Start -> command prompt
Alternatively, you can use Start -> Run -> cmd (or [Windows Key]+[R] -> cmd)

Once it's running, type in the following commands:

    D:
    cd D:\Steam\steamapps\common\StarMade
    starmade-launcher.exe --verbose

Then, perform all of the actions within the launcher to duplicate the white screen issue. Wait a little bit after it happens to see if the launcher recovers on its own (unlikely, but possible), and close the launcher if required. Afterwards, copy the launcher's entire command line output, save it in a txt file, and upload it here (or in a DM) along with launcher.log.

This will allow me to see exactly what's causing the issue.

(If you're having difficulty copy/pasting from the command line, scroll to the very top, click on the window's icon at the very top-left, go to Edit -> Mark within that menu, then click/drag to select the entire output, and hit [Enter] to copy it.)

If any of my instructions aren't clear enough, let me know and I'll be happy to provide screenshots!

I somehow fixed it, didn't get to run the commands, but all I had to do, was remove the data folder in /common/starmade/starmade then verified the game through the launcher.

Worked like a charm after that.

Very strange. That should not have had any effect on the launcher.

The only reason I can think of right off is a filesystem/drive error (or long drive spin-up) -- such a scenario could cause the launcher to hang (and thus fade to white) while waiting for Windows to read the affected file(s).

I verified from steam, and the launcher.

The java launcher got the game up, but never loaded into the game. now both work.

My guess it that verifying from Steam fixed it -- it was likely caused by file corruption, which would cause apparently random issues.

Good to know it's all working again! ^_^

launcher does not understand that there is no A: partition anymore. Launcher needs to check where it is actually trying to put its data, and yes this is after verifying cache on steam. I will re-download entire game, ill update this post how it went.

update, after complete reinstall everything works fine.
