Just another shield block, but this one lets you fly near a sun without taking damage.

It does drain the energy though, so that would make it fair to use.

Or just make it so that actual shields defend from sun damage, which is a feature request as old as shields.

But then every ship would have heath shielding and if you have a separate shield for heath, then you would have to chose what kind of shield you want the most.

I dont see why star damage even matters... they take up so little space in such a large universe.

    1) It's "heat", not "heath"
    2) Maybe. Though I'd prefer something like heat resistant plating (to make ships really specialized).

i personally think that no matter how many shield blocks a ship should not be able to pass through a 10 000 000 K + hot sun. However a shield that makes it so that you can get closer to the sun without taking damage to me is a good idea :)

To be a proper shield it would have to block the radiation that a sun emits, which would make your ship black when active as that include visible light radiation.

If anything, a heat shield should be quite literally a wall of a special block type that you keep facing toward the sun with your ship behind it, whether as part of the ship or a docked shield or something, but this would be the most realistic and make for quite fascinating designs from players.

I find it funny that you were the first person to notice that.

Stars have several issues, one of which you cant see them through glass and you can fly through them which makes no sense. You should just get like 100 meters into the star before a titan dissolves.

I understand what you are saying, but the glass has a bug, fo rme anyways, idk about anyone else, where glares like missiles and suns dont show through them, so even if they take up so little space, for people that have this happen, it WOULD be useful

That's an issue with OpenGL I think. everyone has it. That said, stars aren't that hard to spot. Check your heading before you star flying, and when you turn after entering a star system. Could also use Buildmode to look around your ship while flying, it's what I've always done.

Suns are a little underpowered atm. They should have a gravitational pull and be counted as physical objects, so that you couldn't pass through them.

What if i told you that suns consist of gas in plasma state and therefor you can pass through it? :P

But i agree, they should have graviation and you should notice it, when you touch them. Similar to the effect of water in austronaut-mode (If i remember that right)

Also i think heat-shields would be a good idea, because you could be a faction having a station in/near a sun, and have specialised ships. And all you enemies would have to build heat-shielded ships to attack you.

If power reactors would get a bonus in power generation if placed in a station near the sun, it would be awsome.

I was surprised shields didn't protect from solar heat already. I don't know if this needs to be a separate shield system or part of the existing shields but I think it needs to be addressed either way. I lean towards different shield system relying upon scarce resources, otherwise heat near a star is a non-issue for pretty much everyone and why bother to even have the feature then? If this shield system is somewhat expensive or difficult to acquire, that will give some players and ships a unique advantage.

No, they get dense enough at point you can't pass through them.

Here's my take on the idea:
    1. Shields can protect you from star damage but inside a star regen is 0 so the amount of time you can survive is based on your shield capacity and therefore finite.
    2. Star damage is high enough that even a titan would have a hard time making it all the way through on shields alone.
    3. Heat resistant hull completely protects you from star damage but doesn't stop shields being drained leaving you vulnerable to weapons fire when inside and when exiting a star.

    THIS.

It seems like a much better idea than making shields resistant to heat.
It definitely makes sense that a ship's shields should be damaged while inside a star. Heck, even the Enterprise can't even survive inside a star with shields.
In many sci-fi franchises and indeed real life, there are different interpretations of heat resistant hull. Even the real space shuttles have a heat resistant bottom (although this won't protect it from the sun), so it makes sense that technology would have evolved enough over time for this to be turned into star resisting hull.
Just make sure it has little or no armor rating to balance it out and give it all shapes but only one color (probably some kinda plated black look, like the space shuttle bottom), and it'll be fine.

Well, that hull would be a little OP, so i think they should have like, 75% resistance to heat
