Halo Inspired/More "Human" Texture Pack [WIP] [ALPHA RELEASE]

    So there seems to be a lot of halo fans about, and being one myself too, I figured I would try my hand at a texturepack with a more "human" feel to it, inspired by the Halo series.

    It's a work in progress, and not low resolution..rather not high res, I'm an amateaur. To be honest I am more making it for personal use, but I figure others might want to use it, and you guys may have some good ideas. With the possibility that others may want to use the pack, I will try keep all textures as true to their original look/purpose as possible, while still giving things a fresh look.

    So, without further ado, here are a few previews. All constructive feedback and ideas welcome.

    First off were the decorative panels, we have a server rack, 2 display units, and a switch board.





    Ship Core, I figured it would make sense for it to be some kind of power hub, the player sits in it though, but making a cockpit with 6 identical faces would be a little odd, so I came up with this.





    Plex Storage





    Plex Door, the doors are kind of tricky, because it has to be a door texture which tiles. After some experimenting, I found this works quite well:





    The docking ports/enhancers were interesting. For the turrets I made (what I hope looks like) a somewhat mechanical docking port. On each side there are a set of tracks, which match up with the enhancers, which act as tracks. This would theoretically allow a turret to translate (which would be quite cool actually, if a turret could traverse a stretch of the ship to get better shots).





    And for the ship docking ports, I made a round hatch/docking port a bit like what is used by NASA. For the enhancers, I was stumped for a while, and in the end settled on guidance light kind of things.





    Last for now are the missiles. For the D1000 missiles, I kind of used this as reference. Looking around on the halo wiki, I saw the AGSM-10 Missile system, "guided ordinance used by the UNSC. They are used mainly aboard small spacecraft such as the Longsword, utilizing a high explosive payload and can cause serious structural damage to targets without any shielding" This suggested it was small enough to fit on ships like the longsword, which I intend to make, and apart from the guided part, matched the description of the D1000 missiles, more or less. There was reference in one of the halo novels to AGSM-8 missiles, but little/no information, so I figured this earlier model could be unguided. The image shows the front, left, rear, right, bottom and top views.





    Next were the KB missiles. For these I found the Scorpion Missiles, once again often used on Longswords, and they use motion tracking and proximity detectors to guide themselves to their targets. As close to heat seaking as I could find, and in the right size range.





    Finally there are the Medusa Missiles. These are the lock on missiles used on the Sabres in Reach, so they can realistically be on small ships too (Or imagine very big ones on your capital ships :P). Technically they are fired in salvos of 4, although for the sake of variation, I want all the missile pods to look different. Given I hardly use KB missiles, none of the missiles in starmade can fire salvo, and initially I prefered the look of this design, It made sense to put it on the missiles which I would use more. However when I think about it, it would actually make a lot more sense to swap the front/back design for this with the KB design.





    So yeah, that's it for now, hopefully you can see the textures fine given their size, otherwise I will have to upscale them or something. I should also get some kind of ingame screenshots too...Anyway, let me know what you think, would you use a texture pack like this, do you think things should look different, that kind of stuff.

    Thanks for the positive feedback :)

    Only done about 1/3 to 1/4 of the textures so far, so it\'l be a few days to a week perhaps before I have something uploadable, but I will keep this thread updated.

    First update, just a quick one - shields. The UNSC didnt use shielding on their capital ships for most/all of the human/covenant war, however the Infinity featured a reverse engineered shield system. Couldnt find much/any information on them, but I made this:



    Not really sure how it would work :P but I was thinking something along the lines of a large energy coil, which brightens and dims with the animation. Little ONI stamp up left perhaps suggests its a classified prototype or something.

    I enjoy seeing other\'s texture upgrades. It will be nice when server side options are available and everyone can see your work instead of just you. I have dabbled with some of the textures but am lacking in the skill department. I\'ll get better with time, I suppose.

    im loveing this texture but im the covent of the sever so i cant use it thare if you were to ever want to make a texture for the sever right now atleast only the ungc has a texture and i will love it if you might make one whare the shelds wepons power and other stuff that are needed in all ships have a texture in wich its neather covy/ungc sided and you only make the hull team pasific like smoothe out purple and make it look more like the color it halo hull so it looks like covy ships and more or less black grey and whight is human and purpple blue and red is what i use for the covent i will love it if you make a texture for us both to use hear is a link to the sight you can post the final verson on say towerbilder asked for it if enyone askes about it if thay dont use it i will enyways becuse so far you seem relly good at this and im shure you can help with this to http://star-made.org/content/ugsccovenant-war

    Mmm, the problem is the human and covenant designs are so completely different, it\'s hard to find a middle ground. I could consider a covenant version as well perhaps, though it could be a little tricky.

    As for the hulls, for now atleast I am going with a pretty simple plan design, but I am tweaking the colours a bit to suit various purposes. I have made the green are more olive colour, \'pelican green\'. Purple and blue I have put aside for covenant ships, a pretty similar purpe which would form the basis of most ships, and a dull vein coloured blue I guess, I noticed online that some covenant ships come in a similar colour, and it could make for good high/lowlights on covenant capital ships.

    Here is an example of those 3 colours on my 1:1 pelican design, as well as Hangover\'s seraph starfighter.



    Ignore the pink for now, I use it to help seperate the textures so I can see what I am doing, but it is in the blend zones for textures, so it shows up when you view them at a angle - It\'l be gone once the pack is done.

    I really like halo and I think this will be great when its finished!

    PS: I like the pelican^, it\'s one of my favourite vehicles from halo!

    Great work mate, I noticed on the missiles you have a pixelated version of the UNSC emblem. I\'m making the forward unto dawn on a 2:1 ratio and need the logo, so could you PM me a larger image if it please?

    General BLT, I just googled an image of the UNSC logo, shrunk it down, and traced over then cleaned up what I was left with. You are welcome to take one of the textures I posted, and use the pixel layout there, but I don\'t have a larger image on hand. I could do you a larger higher res copy if you wanted, what kind of resolution are you wanting?

    Also, interesting update. I have been looking through all the starmade files, and I have had an interesting idea. Fortunately all the files are for the most part, readily available and moddable, so what I was thinking, is I could actually take the antimatter cannon for example, retexture it to look like say the chin mounted chaingun on a pelican, replace the laser sounds with bullet sounds, and even go as far as renaming the actual blocks of weapons to the new UNSC names (provided the dev wouldn\'t have a problem with such modding). The only thing missing from the equation is the AMC (or rocket) projectiles. I can\'t find a texture for them, so I might have to look into the shader files and see about making something more bullet like. Sound good?

    Also I am making steady progress on the textures. About half done now, got a few ideas for some of the remaining blocks. There are a few hard ones though, really not sure what to make them look like, if anyone has some suggestions, I am looking for ideas for the salvage cannon/beam, power drain and supply beams, and the repair beam.

    Figured I would give a bit of an update.

    I\'ve slowed down lately because I decided to retexture all of the \"natural\" textures, such as sand, plants, etc. Originally I hadn\'t intended on doing this as I had never tried these kinds of textures before, and they can be a little complicated. However after trying a few of them, I was very impressed with the results. Here is a preview of all the common textures on a desert planet:

    The cactus was actually the first natural texture I tried, and I really liked it.



    Moving on, as far as the ship textures go, I am making really good progress, all that\'s left now are a few mew weapon computers, and then all the laser based weapons...still not really sure what to do with them. Anywho, here is a preview of most of the ship related textures so far:

    You\'ll notice that also includes the tree texture, and I was pleasantly suprised how that turned out - very happy with it. Once again, ignore all the pink in the images, I use it to seperate the borders of textures, however it is in the bleed zone, so it shows up in game - it will all be gone when this is down.

    Right, so as I was changing the natural textures, I was flying from planet to planet checking out how things looked, then I found one of those purple planets, and I had an idea. Now I won\'t say what it is, if it is not aparent to a halo fan what it is, then I need to take it back to the drawing board. But to anyone still following this thread, if you know this is a halo themed texture pack, and I show you the following picture, what do you think of?

    Thanks, but does it remind you of a certain something from Halo? :P A certain \"faction\" perhaps? On a planet covered in giant tentacle like structures?

    :D Bingo.

    The textures are a little rough at the moment, triyng to make well tiling organic textures is a little difficult, but I like the idea of having these infected planets around the galaxy. If I do the textures right, so that they are multi-purpose and can be used in ships, you could have your pirates as flood controlled UNSC ships, or even make a faction out of it.

    I just thought about taking uploaded ships and attach some kind of \"infection\" to them. Like on this picture:



    I\'il definetly use your textures once you\'re finished ;)

    I can maybe also help you with the flood-textures? I\'m currently working on a player-skin taking this as reference:

    That first picture is exactly what I was thinking of, should be good :). As far as the flood textures go, we could certainly have a go. I\'ve had an idea on how to redo the flood texture to look a little more fungal, which I would like to try out, but I would be more than happy to colaborate and see what we come up with, so long as it suits the \"style\" the other natural textures will follow. I really have to head off, but I will be back in around 13 hours, and I\'ll send you a PM with what I have, and we can go from there.

    Regarding the texture pack as a whole, progress is really good. Where ship elements are concerned, I just need to do a texture for the power supply and drain beams, and once that is done I will upload another preview. After that I just need to finish off the natural textures, and the texture the factory blocks. I might also do some of the items? For example the hand held blaster could be a plasma pistol or a magnum.
