Galaxy Map and Universe structure questions

Hi, new player here. almost done with my first legit ship. Over the past month or two I've been trying to learn the game before I join a server. One thing I haven't been able to understand is the map.

Everything I've seen online, videos and pictures look like this:

but all I see is:

I don't see any stars of even systems I've visited. Also the Planet Orbits, Asteroid Belt Orbits and Orbital Sector toggles on the UI don't appear to do anything. Also if I hold shift to move entire system to see what way out there, I find no variety. No Black holes. No empty systems like you would find between the arms of a spiral galaxy as in the first picture. Just endless systems littered with random stations and planets.

Did they change it to this or are my settings weird or something? It would boggle my mind to think they would change to from the first picture and having black holes and binary star system to a boring scaring of the same thing forever. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am seriously perplexed.

Maybe you zoomed out too much.
Have you tried creating a new world?

Yeah, what you are seeing is the map in a universe, which was generated before the galaxy update.

Yeah, you're gonna have to make a new universe... Those were the old universes, which are not organized into galaxies and orbits and just generate infinite numbers of identical stars...

If this is why I have no idea how it could happen. I bought and downloaded the game about 2 months ago v0.194. I've never had the old UI from before the galaxy update so how could I have created an old world with the new UI where I could build shipyards and rails without updating to a newer version.

I made a small server for friends and I to learn the game on. now if I want the new galaxy we'll have to cheat all out stuff back in so we don't lose progress. Any way I can do this more effectively?

Blueprint everything you had before. Change the world, admin-spawn the blueprints.

Well you are an admin, if you must you can just give yourself those items.
Having a quick look though you might be able to transfer the stuff over.
This is untested by myself. Go to the server-database folder (in the starmade folder) and find the old worlds files. Then hunt for the files with "ENTITY_PLAYERCHARACTER_(your name)"

I saw two with my exact name, if you see both then just copy them both over to the new universes folder. and then try it out.
EDIT: Ah read again one was entity_playercharacter and the other was entity_playerstate. Still copy both over to the new universe and gl.

EDIT2: Oh inventories as well. I should read more throughly. If you export the sector you are in and reimport it into the new universe you can get it all as is. But I can't give you instructions for that. Try and search one of the wiki or hope some kind soul comes along.

Many thanks! I was able to export and import the sector for our station preserving inventories and ships and copying over the player inventories work as well. so far all is well. Thanks everyone!

Use the export sector command. Export the various sectors you and your friends have your stations and stored gear in. Spawn the sectors into the new world when generated. All the store items Stations, Docked ships will be brought into the new world. WARNING: This will overwrite the new sectors and hence any updates the new sectors would have received. I have not tried this on the latest patch.
