I've been having a odd issue with seeing my Character in third person and seeing other peoples characters.

It doesn't matter where it is, if I am in a ship with my pals on our server I can't see them, and I can't see myself if I go third person, if I am outside the ship, and I look at it in third person I am not only appearing to be as big as the ship (or bigger) I also appear to be behind it even when I am in front of it. this goes for stations and planets too. I honestly seem to be a part of the background. See below and you will find an example.

My head is under the ship when it shouldn't be, and my friend is in the open airlock, completely invisible to me.

anyone know how to fix this?

Ahaha, you should make a video of this, these types of bugs (where textures get mixed up places) is quite common in alpha game but it's always VERY funny.

Can I get you to tell me what version of SM you are running, what hardware you are using including the CPU and GPU plus the version/edition of windows you're using.

You can get most if not all that info from Dxdiag. In the start menu type RUN when the box pops up type DXDIAG and let it run. The info you are looking for is mostly on the first tab and the display tab.

StarMade will tell you what version you have in the launcher window.

Not gonna lie, when I first saw this thread I thought it was a bug where in Dave's skin got swapped with the background somehow, creating a space with his skin stretched across the horizon o - o

looks a bit like anti-aliasing enabled on 4x with outdated drivers.
Some of them still mess it up with the white background, but in those cases its caused by badly outdated drivers.

Andy, The white background is because I turned off the dynamic backgrounds in general. that ain't a bug, I don't know why the blank black void turns white in screenshots with the backgrounds off.
I also have anti-aliasing off as well. and my drivers are more or less up to date as far as my archaic rig is concerned.
I also did a fresh install of Starmade, that didn't help.

I'd highly recommend Raptr to anyone with AMD based GPUs or (and especially) APUs. It acts like Geforce Experience with slightly more stability in that it informs you of updates and helps optimize games for your specific hardware. I've even used Raptr on purely Intel machines with a degree of success. But it is only a tool after all. It's by no means a cure all or a replacement for knowing the right driver to grab.

This link oughta help some. Just remember you're using an E series 450 APU http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
And give Raptr a try. You might find some tweaked settings there for your other games that give you an idea what you can and can't enable in StarMade.

Again, it is not my computer personally, all my stuff is up to date. this has been happening for a week to me, I only now just stopped being lazy enough to report it. Being a part of a Roleplay server it is kinda hard to take one of your servers main elements into play when you can't even see your counterpart in front of you when you're on the Bridge of a ship. it happens on single player too.

And I do have Raptr, it doesn't seem to do anything for my Starmade, dunno why I guess Raptr is trying to boost the launcher instead of the extended game program out of it? does it to me for some of my other launcher based games too.
    =note I don't have Starmade on steam.

Raptr does not have StarMade as part of its config DB. Yet. But seeing what other games use in optimal configurations might give you some hints on what to nail down so your SM config behaves better.

Does playing with shadows settings or occlusion culling have any effect?

[/SPOILER]I had the same problem, and tried shadows on barebone, and I can confirm that it fixes the problem. Here is a before and after:
    Before: starmade-screenshot-0003.png After: starmade-screenshot-0005.png

I did notice something peculiar when I was testing it though, I'll call it the 'Sepia tone glitch'

Whenever I look in the right directions, everything turns sepia. The majority of the time it's normal. I've effectively traded one problem for another. If it helps, here is my config file :

Any help with this new glitch would be appreciated. I will post this as a separate bug if it turns out that the bugs are not related.

EDIT: Just found out that turning bloom on fixes this issue.
