Well, two things:I never suggested that. I prefer to mine for a while then build for a while, that way you don't NEED to store so much material at one time. But that is just my play style.
1) Mining asteroids can be a nice zen relaxation moment.
2) Rammet is damned near impossible to find on my server on an asteroid, so the only viable source of it really is eating planets. And I hate leaving sloppy half eaten planets or plates littering a system, so I make sure to clean my plate before moving on to another one. I also don't like dumping all the rock and such because it may become useful in the future, and it probably will about 2 releases after I empty out my horde.
So yeah, pretty much every time I build a larger ship or a station, I have to eat an entire planet just for the rammet to make shields for it. So I have tens of millions of things like mattise capsules sitting in storage, and enough planetary rock to build an entire solar system from scratch.
Right now resource gathering is not balanced, to get what you need you get a lot of what you don't need, and tons of what you can't use at all. And since I doubt its going to always be the case that things like icy rock are going to be 100% worthless, I hold on to it for the day when maybe I can use it for something cool.
Which means my station is currently more packed with piles of garbage than three episodes of Hoarders.
