Can't connect to servers

Using the latest version of StarMade, me and many of my friends, whenever we try to connect to a server it just gets stuck at connecting to ipaddress:4242. I've looked everywhere, and I haven't found a solution. Singleplayer works just fine for me, but I can't connect to any servers.

What happens is:
1. Me, or one of my friends start a server, after port forwarding.
2. After opening the dedicated server, we'd start the game and put the IP of the person hosting it into the multiplayer box.
3. Clicked "OK"
4. Stuck on connecting to friendsipaddress:4242

has your friend forwarded port 4242 on their router?

Yes.

Can you connect to a server that you're running on your computer? (Connect to localhost)
If this doesn't work, I don't get why SP works for you.
If it does, the mistake is not on your end. Your friend probably has to whitelist the port in his/her firewall settings.

I found with my game, having a similar problem, that an internet filter can sometimes cause connection issues. If you have one, you could try disabling/uninstalling it and try the game. That worked for me.
