Civilian ships does not use classification by weight, but by their purpouse. So we really dont need class names.

In this classification list, I think that dreadnaught have way too huge span. Ships that is ten time bigger should not been in same class.

And for ships over 200k I dont think there is a need for a class name, those ship would be so rare that they dont need a class. (and in current version of game totaly unplayable)

Shouldn\'t there be a heavy Fighter Class, and a Corvette stuck in there between Fighter and Frigate?

Well yes, i call them Heavy Fighters, Fighter-Bombers based on their purpose, but they still have fighter in the name. Perhaps, Bomber is inbetween Fighter and Corvette

My classification system is and will most likely stay a minimalistic one. I balance the numbers for each class based on the number and purpose of ships I see on multiplayer servers (Built by everybody, new and old alike. I\'m not going to balance them for a realistic economy until one actually exists), and give a short explanation of what piloting each would feel like.

These should be used as guidelines to help new folks understand how large the average ship (Medium class) is and gives people a rough idea of what size can damage what other sizes. Older players can find a classification system useful depending on their building style.

Some people will build something with a mass of 2K and call it a frigate, and others might build something with a mass of 200 and call it a battlecruiser. That\'s not something that I can or want to control.

I love this one because it is well-designed for ships designed for function.

A lot of these \"stupidly big ships\" that are supported by systems like the Nameless ones are not really built for use or combat, but for just showing off/having fun.

If the catalog is going to get more fleshed out it would be quite useful to have official naming conventions for various ships so you know what you\'re getting into before you commit resources.

However, there are some issues with Blitz\'s system due to the function of various spaceships. For example, one of my mining ships might be classified as a cruiser despite it being a large, floating brick full of mining beams and a couple of guns. There would need to be a separate system for noncombat roles as well as differentiation between, say, cruisers and light carriers of the same tonnage if this were implemented.

I believe that a reliable system of classification should be implemented for the purpose of avoiding confusion and, when servers capable of supporting more players and factions become available, the ability to put together coherent fleets and information with minimal difficulty within factions and groups of players.

Now, here is a tentative example of a classification system influenced by this thread, the Nameless guide, EVE Online, and of course Starmade itself. This does not yet address the issue of civilian vs military naming schemes.

I was wondering how to find the total block count in your ship, without counting every block you place.

I made a huge ship, (if I do the normal dimensions it comes out to be a calibri class ship) with the normal dimensions of 105x35x38 this is not taking into account the curves and circular parts I have put into this thing (which house most of the power and weaponry)

So anyway on how to find the proper mass of this ship? Perhaps looking at some of the blueprint details?

When in build mode for a ship all the relevant stats are on the left side of the screen.

Since a bunch of blocks can be arranged with a LOT of free space in between, ships can really vary a lot. The same number of blocks can mean a huge ship or a compact one. If you build ships with not much free space inside you\'ll end up being way over the category your ship looks alike. I\'m choosing my ship\'s categories after the ship\'s purpose mainly. Big ships, however, get name extensions, like \"heavy fighter\", etc.
The lists, however, are a good orientation source.

Ah, ship classification! It\'s quite the bugbear and often suffers from attempts to make a unified classification system. There easiest solution (which doesn\'t require much of a change to your current classification system) seems to work thusly:

Use a dual-tiered system that takes into account both role and displacement. An escort destroyer, for instance, has a role (defending fleet assets from smaller ships/torpedos) and a displacement (destroyer-class). It would be comperable in size, but not necessarily capability to something like an Assault Destroyer, which would be a destroyer-sized ship built around dealing and tanking damage.

It allows for a great deal of flexibility while allowing for all sorts of design approaches.

One might be tempted, I think, to try and also classify ships by overall firepower, but that\'s a mistake. One designer\'s assault destroyer might end up having more firepower than another designer\'s Fleet Heavy Cruiser, but that doesn\'t make the smaller ship a cruiser, nor does it mean that the larger ship only sports \"destroyer grade\" weaponry. Let that stuff slide as it\'s not important in the context of this game.
