So, I was thinking at some point for me own personal stuff, "How could fleet management be done when you control ye own ship?"

Conveniently enough, I was playing Homeworld, thus I got the idea of a fleet mode to be implemented.

We all know that Schine will eventually be putting in AI fleets in which players can command, the way you command them has never been specified. How about we completely ripoff Homeworld's Sensor Mode, call it "Fleet Mode" and make it that the commander of the fleet is able to use it to issue orders to all ships of the fleet, AI or not. The commander's ship will be controlled by an AI when in fleet, in which the commander can issue commands to said ship, preventing him from being a sitting duck. The move system can continue to ripoff Homeworld, and just do the exact same thing.

Note: This is here in case Schine is actually allowed to do this (I highly doubt it :p) and to start discussion on this stuff.

I've always thought an updated map with this type of view is the way to go.

I don't really want to micro manage movement in the sector. I think we should regulate that to human players, but we could set targets and strategies for the ai to follow.

Gotta admit, Homeworld pioneered a whole fecking lot of Space-related stuff.

They flopped in a few places too. (looking at you "battle" music that sounds like trancey garbage)

I've seen other games that ripped off the "sensors" mode to both greater and lesser degrees, and most of them did it well.
(Sword of The Stars did a very good sensors system, though issuing an off-plane move order was all but impossible)
(an even older game, Ascendancy, had a very good movement system, but it was a smidge on the clunky side. 'ocourse, it's fecking old {I've heard it got a fapple-only remake, and mores the pity, thing shoulda stayed on PC})

Managing ship movements like this might be good, but I'm kind of divided on this. All SM really needs is the ability to command your AI ships to follow you, follow something else, or attack something... But then, a full-on capital ship command mode that lets you dictate directions and maneuvers would be really neat.

    Aye, babysteps first.

Still, nothing wrong with plotting out how the playerbase thinks the fleet-system ought to end up while we're waiting, eh?

I don't think so. At some point I don't want to be in every battle. I just want to send some NPC crew to go secure a station or fend of a small scav raiding party.

I would really love to see fleet management similar to the X series, like autonomous roaming traders, ships that can be given orders from anywhere, etc. It was so cool seeing your faction become a big economical/military presence in those games. Those who played those games know what I mean.

If I had one wish on a feature for this game, fleet management like X would be it.

EXCUUUUUUSE ME! I love the Homeworld music, it's amazing! Listening to it right now. :p

And of course, it could be (hopefully) implemented pretty well for fleet command.

That's more empire management than fleet management. :p

Hehe, yeah, music is all about personal taste. It is good music, but it actually makes me sleepy.
I'd rather have Rock for battle music. Most of that helps me stay awake.

To be fair to him, Empire management is, in a space-game, just Fleet management of more than one fleet.

    Grand Admiral, instead of Commodore.

I'd be fine with an Empire-sized fleet management system, but I recognize we're more likely to get Flotilla level management.
The latter is the kind we most desperately need.

    NOTES:
Admiral of the Fleet, on Wikipedia. See Paragraph 2 of the article.
That's the British version, so the name is different. The German equivalent IS Grand Admiral, and The USA version is Fleet Admiral.
Naval Fleet, allso on Wikipedia. While I see no specific mention of Merchant ships (freighters), are you really going to say that we couldn't use the ability to tell those "mostly harmless" shits where to go?
Commodore, allso on Wikipedia. See Paragraph 2 of the article.
Flotilla, allso on Wikipedia. In practice, this is functionally equivalent to an Air Force Fighter/Bomber/Interceptor Squadron.
Note that most such "squadrons" are all the same type of plane. That's basically what a flotilla is, but for Ships.

You see, we'll have both once empiric factions become a thing. I'm just proposing an idea for controlling a single fleet in battles, rather than an entire empire.

I would be quite happy with predetermined options for AI in ships, like attack on sight, escort, scout, defend, etc.
But honestly,as a huge fan of homeworld..that would be amazing to be able to manage your fleets like that :D

I suggested exactly this a while ago.....

Naturally, I think it would be a great idea. And being able to effectively use multiple of them could stop people asking for small ships to get some sort of massive boost.
