As we all know having inertia dampening turned off is more realistic, but makes it impossible to recover a ship after a crash.
To fix this, ships that suddenly fined themselves without a pilot should automatically stop themselves.

I agree with this, but a check would have to be made for if it's unmanned/not ai controlled/doesn't have any active logic systems attatched to passive push or pulse modules :P

Maybe an option on the AI screen can be added to stop your own ships remotely.
That should not have much impact on computer-performance.

    Edit: Allways those damm typos...

Another solution is to have damping activate on a collision and turn off when the ship thrusts (not braking) or stops.

On SP, you can use tab F8 to remotely control a ship. But yeah, good idea.

Have it so that if a 'true' signal is being asserted to the ship console, it will auto brake.

    You're not thinking this through.

(area trigger) -> (not gate) -> (ship core)

If you aren't standing in the right spot, the ship brakes.

    Lots of other ideas too.

actually, sgallaty may have the simple answer, if a person in a ship core is also considered an area activator...
then we can simply change ship behaviour as desired, like "stop"... or activate AI when you die...

    Agree...and in addition...

-Add a check-box to choose whether or not to check for astronaut. Then you can design for unmanned builds OR for the 'tethered-astronaut'.

Isn't this already in the game? In thruster control panel there's a button that says "turn on auto-dampening on exit" or something to that effect.

This is an old thread from before that feature coming to be, that's been bumped for whatever reason.
