I have read a lot of topics in starmade forums about spherical planets inplementation, but I didn't saw anywhere idea like what I came up with.
From a distance planet would render as big sphere (similiar how it's now but sphere would not be transparent), this sphere would be illusion of planet. Diameter of this sphere could be, let's say - 12km long.
When u are flying through atmosphere then sphere disappear and big oval disc renders (like how it now work). It's field should be equal to sphere's field.
For now it looks very similiar to the current system. Planet's are just bigger in my idea, to make them look like real planets, not dwarf discs. Let's read the rest of my idea.
There would be few differences between the current system and the system from my idea.
1. When u're near end of planet disc then it teleports u to opposite side of disc, like this:
U're red dot, green dot shows position after teleportation.
(terrain generated on borders should be somehow similiar to make player don't feel that He has been teleportet.
2. Lower parts of planet should be core, impossible to go through.
3. When u pass trough atmosphere then u can't spawn under disc, u must always spawn above it. And there should be some way to make unable to go under planet disc.
