Why not have a system in advanced build mode that auto places wedges on the exterior of a hull. It could act similar to the current box where you can expand the edges of the box to fit the appropriate size or it could act like a paintbrush.
    Why would anyone want this?

Please starmade devs! I will sacrifice my firstborn in a ritualistic ceremony for this feature!

I think this needs more clarification. How would you like to tell the computer where it needs to place wedges and in what orientation? Computers need input to work right, and an "assumed" correct orientation might not be the solution you want, forcing you to waste time, deleting the incorrectly-placed wedges.

For example, your game may assume that all wedges need to be placed in a forward-facing orientation, but you may want some angles to drop off the side instead. For big designs, this could be a 1000+ block mistake!

Alternatively, you might want to check out the copy-paste method of building that has recently been brought to light to illustrate how you can more easily build up angled hulls. http://starmadedock.net/threads/ultimate-ship-building-process.2410/

More clarification? Not really. The old smedit had a feature similar to this, all it would have to do is
Are there 3 faces?: Yes place penta
are there 2 faces?: Yes place Wedge to connect the two.
A tetra would just look for 2 diagonal pentas and go right in between it.
I'm no programmer so I don't know how any of this works, but I don't really think it's too challenging for the game to look for specific areas and imput a block based on fitting criteria. If you want some angles to drop off the side (whatever that means) you could probably just do it yourself. I'd rather have to change a few (or even a hundred) misplaced wedges than have to manually place them all over a massive 500 m ship (which would still probably result in error). Even if this system would only place wedges and pentas, It'd still be miles faster than doing it by hand.

I agree. needs to be added (but only surface, not ugly copy&paste-redundant box-feature)

I would prefer full blocks being replaced by pentas, tetras being added.

Also: All Paint features, drawing on a surface (by replacing coloured hulls). Let's you quickly draw the next deck and then build it with blocks.
(or for signs on your hull)
