I suggest that an item be added to extend the speed limit, or just increase the speed limit.
    What does everyone else think?

I like this idea. It supports the idea of having small and heavy class ships (such as a bomber specialised in destroying those capital ships.. The speed limit should just be upped to say 200km/h. With this you could then have a limit to the number of thrusters that a ship can support, meaning that as the ship gets heavier and bulkier you wont be able to put on any more thrusters to account for the increasing weight that is slowing the ship down

This would be best implemented if higher speeds were harder and took longer to reach, so turning at max speed is a lot harder / slower, and the rate of acceleration decreases as you travel faster and faster.

Hence even if you were a rich player you would not just be able to go super crazy with your ship size and speed and it would reach a point where increasing the size of your ship would actually decrease the effectiveness of your ship as a whole, making you easier to defeat.

I like all these suggestions, and I now propose a new idea, where, like \"visitor\" said,

Technically the size of the ship shouldn\'t limit the top speed, only how quickly it accelerates. There\'s no air in space to provide resistance and slow the ship down. Planets on the other hand.....

You also have to consider server load. If somebody is flying along at 250, then they\'re forcing the server to load things up to 5x as much as the default speed limit dictates. Servers are already straining to deal with the megalithic ships people build, so I think dealing with huge ships is a much bigger issue (no pun intended).

Maybe just have the more thrusters the faster the ship can go? and i mean like 5 thrusters is +1Km to prevent going 100Km at the beginning of the game

..I thought you could go 99km/h if you have just a core-energy generator-engine

Such settings can be defined on a server.cfg, as someone mentioned.

Also I agree with Raok that the size of the ship SHOULDN\'T limit top speed. Just for a stupid example, I could tape myself to a semi truck, and shoot a .50 CAL AWP to thrust myself through space.

Plus the game is still in Alpha. I\'m sure once the game is fully stable and optimized, there won\'t even be a speed limit anymore (or at least an extremely high limit). All ships could technically obtain an extremely high speed, the only differences between all of them would be the acceleration.

So pretty much what everyone is saying is that weight should decrease acceleration, and that thrusters should increase max speed no matter the weight? Ok. Seems good.
    Keep suggesting though.

i think there shouldbe no limit, it should depend on how many thrusters there are and the weight of the ship. i went ton a server and i could actually get away from some enemies, not just stay at the same speed. You should add this to singleplayer.

in space there is no drag and objects in motion do not lose there energy while in motion therefore they stay in motion/ but if you and force in the opposite direction I.E. you hold down S to slow down or stop your ship. In theory the ship would continue to accelerate to an infinite speed as there is nothing to cause force for it to reach a maximum speed. So the speed limit in Star Made would be more of a safety feature really. Because if you have a multiplayer server and have ships zipping about the universes at 1,000,000 KM/H youd have no way to turn and i dont believe the current game engins can handle that kind of computer generation of the universe around your ship. So all in all i can see an increase from 50 to say 100. But if you want to get from place to place faster id suggest telporting your ship and yourself.

Size of ship should never limit top speed. The Mass Vs. the Thrust should affect acceleration speeds, breaking speeds (reverse thrust) and turning which it already affects. Maybe they need to be tweaked a bit but, in space, something could technically speed up forever. Of course your pilot would die from the force of it lol.

In space, you don\'t need more POWERFUL engines to reach a \"top speed\" only to reach it quicker.

Also, you can modify the top speed on your server in the server.cfg file. I would suggest NOT putting it above 150km/h. We keep ours at 100 and if a lot of people are zipping through sectors at the same time, it can kill your server. There are also other settings in there to adjust the amount of time a sector stays loaded after it\'s empty etc... Some tweaking could get you higher but 150km/h is REALLY fast in this game. Jump in a tiny fighter with a ton of thrust and it\'s SUPER hard to control with those speeds.

You can also make space really like space... If you bump something it will NOT ever stop until it collides with something. You can edit the config file for this.

not really needed as there is a way to change speed limit on servers.

Yeah, to everyone talking about there being no friction and space and stuff, I already know all that, but this is a game. Now, maybe they should make it a bit more realistic, but it\'d be no fun having to continuously slow down and wait until you bump into something. Unless they added orion-type ships. With nuclear bomb propulsion.

I made a suggestion relating to this speed limit business actually.

    http://star-made.org/content/split-engines-different-types-different-effects-also-add-item-levelstiers

To be fair, it would be more about designing to make it fast or not. Currently, engines just effect your acceleration really, so my idea was to spruce up the system a bit. The second half of the post is a separate idea, which has less to do with the topic of speed.

I would say that you need a special thurster just like a warp core or something like that to go faster then 50km or faster then 100km but this will use an aweful amount of power so that only big ships with a lot energy can use it.

is everyone finding that the top speed is 50? on my unedited single player and on my server it is 74.8 (75)kph

On the topic of the safety issue of flying around at 100 000 km/h; There\'s a reason people in Sci-Fi movies aren\'t turning on the hyperdrive to get to light speed while in the middle of the meteor cluster. Obviously, travelling at extreme speeds should be allowed but also come with the great risk that unless you\'re a hundred percent sure that the route in front of you is clear, you\'re going to smash into something. And incorrectly timed decceleration would place you far, far away from the originally intended destination. \'Cause that\'s how jumps work. And I think it\'d be awesome if they did too in the game.
