      Eh, for a while they will be drone swarms, but ideally flying normal AI fleets will soon/eventually require NPC pilots for all the fleet ships. A drone controller which synchronizes AIs to work a bit like pilots and be able to follow a carrier, could then become a capital ship system.

      Ideally, in the future, the limiting factor of fleets would be crew. They, of course, might cost faction points to keep around... And faction points when they die, too.

      Yeh, there's really no point in talking about overall mass limits ever, but especially when the game's engine is in its current only semi-optimized state... I'm more concerned about graphics lag, where I doubt there's as much room to optimize...

      Oh, speaking of jumping fleets, how will fleets and FTL be handled? Hell, will they be handled? Because if not then fleets will be an almost purely defensive measure... Which ruins about 3/4 of what excites me about the update.

      The whole reason it's limited is that large mass placement is laggy. You can go into your local server configuration file and increase the max build limits in your singleplayer game, but if you make it something completely nuts (say, 1000x1000x1000, which you can totally do) don't be surprised...

      Criss, I suggest that you save yourself and everyone else some trouble, and cap ship sizes at 450-500. Optimization can only go so far, and I don't especially like the prospect of saving those monstrosities in server databases either. Never even mind the fact that not everyone has a GTX-980 and...

      My plan: Stock up on corvettes and frigates to escort my larger ships and mining vessels... Then laugh when I'm the only one who properly prepared for the update because everyone else was expecting tons of capabilities that aren't actually in it.

      Well, I don't know much about it, but a java .jar, when unzipped, is full of resources and class files. I'd assume that, without obfuscation, you could freely pop open the class files in Notepad++ (or anything else, for that matter) and edit things... And crack/steal the game for redistribution...
