Do that with planet rotation on and you get a big fast rotating sphere (could be used for large scale defence as shields from different segments could regenerate while on the other side) :D
You mean planet segments which are natural and not visited for a time should recreate a fresh environment when you see this chunk next time. new grass on dirt... ?

The problem with planets are tunnels, mines and over-hang cliffs.
I know a strategy game (springrts.com based on GPL) that has very huge pretty maps with 1'000 units limit above 5'000 it often starts to lag even though it is written in C++.
But it is unable to have over-hang cliffs, tunnels or...

if you now slave the logic and mesh to the controller, it works like an input from a signal source to the logic.
How to select the signal source? I think every 0.5 seconds on source should...
I usually use only orange and green because they are the least interfering with the forum colours (to me at least)
Orange for major parts (like shine colour) green for minor parts (like comments in java code elements)

While true it is always easier to make something right from the beginning to consider the possibilities you want to support and build something that is capable to do it.
Some cannons (like shotguns) are devastating at short range, but not if most miss.
Short-range guns don't need to be fast and do not need to stabilize the projectile.
In long-range guns that may drain some power in form of magnetic fields if you are working with rail guns.
Laser damage does not...

Their sensors are very nice to detect an area with few lag.
How are you able to store in a (7x5y +10) inventory + slot bar:
15 = 3 different hull colours and all shapes
16 = 8 weapon cpus and barrels
7 = logic elements
5+ door, display, deko some hardened hull (even if only the 3 full blocks) ...
4 = help + weapons
now you are already out of space...
