Most of the big ship builders have machines capable of handling kilonaughts and planets in the same frame ;) Keppy has a picture of the Charon over a 1kmR planet fully rendered. It's very possible to render all of a big ship, just turn up max chunks and have a good enough PC

Honestly, no one knows. It's all guessing and overkill in the high end servers. EE used to run with 96GB ram and 2 hex core processors, and it still wasn't enough. The game changes so often and the community is constantly pushing it. Bottlenecks that cause lag can be anything from someone...

What? are you talking about pirates following you whilst you're jammed? If so, that's a bug and shouldn't be bought back. or are you talking about following other people while you're jammed? If so, feel free to do that.

Shield sharing could be exploited. What is to stop me putting a small, pretty much unusable warp gate on my station that leads to several big ugly shield generator station half way across the galaxy?

But that would require loading in the other sector, or even sectors if in a chain, so the game could check shields.
