As someone has said, advanced armor gets a reduction in damage. I have a small fighter (less than 200 mass) that has cannon shots that can pierce through 2.5 blocks of advanced armor. That same shot goes through 10 hull blocks, probably more.

The biggest ship I have built is about 3-3.5 k mass, but most of my ships are in the 150-300 mass in size. In the small amount of testing I've done, a fleet will always smash a single ship of equivalent mass. Losing a gun on a large ship is much more damaging than losing a few small ships out...

Just turn on the universe map and look around your galaxy, you should be able to find them. There are also giant stars and smaller, fainter ones.
