I think you want to use tab+f3 in-game. Enable/disable the framebuffer
If it isn't tab+f3, the option is in the advanced settings of the connection setup window.
Allocate more memory to the game - just because you have 8gb, doesn't mean the game uses it.
Also, planets will brutalise your FPS. I have a gtx970 and I lose hundreds of FPS looking at planets.
I tend to jam most of my point defense turret systems under the mothership hull, for super-low profile point defense turrets.

I agree with lxalite, a combo system would work beautifully for this.
I wouldn't call these tiers, however. I'd call them different classes of the same system. Another thing you should add: Each entity is limited to one class of each system. So you can't have all thruster types on a single ship...
1: That's the strangest way to play multiplayer I've ever heard. It doesn't cost anything to run a server from your own PC
2: There is an option in your server.cfg file to disable default enemy use.
