I think in the starmade universe hull and armor blocks aren't solid pieces of metal. Would explain why normal hull is pretty low mass. Advanced armor is anyone's guess. I like this suggestion.

I've always been down with recycling or condensing junk materials into worthwhile stuff. Something like .5% of rocks recycled would turn into a random ore.
