That is just a lighting glitch that happens on the faces of some penta/tetras. I don't know a fix for it, I think it's just inherent of how the game handles lighting.

For the mod this ship design was nicked from, it's the second biggest ship for the Soviets, it would be a bit weird for something huge to land. :p

My idea for this sort of thing is just that the blocks have mass. That way a builder is not constrained at all, stations can store whatever you need, but that transporting large amounts of blocks is actually quite difficult.

The issue with that is not the lack of information about said servers to give, but the lack of the will of players and hosts to make a server like that.

I like this idea, and I think it would work really well with logic considering how the beams angle to hit targets.
