As far as I am aware this functionality wasn't complete so it has been temporarily removed. You can easily access chests via build mode assuming you do not have them buried. I never even used the drop down menu for chests as there was never any way to tell which chest was what.

Hmm, I only learned you could access those chests form the inventory about three weeks ago LOL, so it's back to the old method of just go to build mode, or even more realistic, exit the core to open them.
I do believe however this storage access will be fixed in due time.

My issue it that it is VERY buried because I learned the inventory thing and then redesigned the ship. DAMN.

I believe in order to access inventories from a controlled core you now have to name the inventory and then you can access it from the drop down in your own inventory
