It feels like I am really limited on salvager size due to the shear amount of lag formed from salvaging. Can you guys come up with any good methods of how salvage beams should be to solve this? Turning off beams does not help btw.

What are you mining that causes lag? Planets? Asteroids? Stations?

Oh my god tell me about it mate, christ I swear even it there's only one tube of salvagers the game refuses to save and then crashes, resetting everything!

Nothing short of hopping out n' lasering the bugger I reckon.

This is also a pretty big lag causer on servers. I'm guessing those calcs involved with more than 50-100 salvage beams get hefty.

Big salvagers are only required for planet-eating. For not having to lag all the time, I prefer to keep two different ones - One for asteroids, with a smaller array that does not cause harm to my PC, and other for planets when I'm desperate for shields.... so at least I'll not suffer all the time.

I wonder if those blue boxes cause any additional lag? Not a large source I would think, but being able to turn those off too would be nice.
I think having some kind of abstracted salvage system, with less harsh calculations, would be much better.
Having 5 people salvaging planets at once would be too much.

Edit: If you salvage a planet's plate, it could just do meta-data "salvage damage"?
As was suggested with planetary extractors, hand-mining would remain. Ore could be put into larger veins(maybe there could be some small ore on/just below the surface).
We then have 3(counting planetary extractors) different lagless planetary mining methods.

I have a mining ship that does strips along whatever automatically. It has a double row of beams and doesn't lag on my server. I even made it wider recently but haven't updated the blueprint yet. Just start it over a salvageable tile, hit the activation button and grab yourself a drink. You don't even need to be in it. Just nearby. You could set up a few and just pull the ores out of the collection chests...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the reason they cause lag is because they now have the same long range as beam cannons instead of the standard 50 block range they used to...

I think if they were just reduced to their old range, they would not be laggy any more.

Pretty sure the range isn't the issue. They still caused massive server choking back when they were short if you had a decent sized salvager, plus you had to wait for the blocks to update in your inventory and graphically.

Could be wrong but I think changes to each block have to be verified by the server and sent back, or the game gets really exploitable.

In any case, this should be a very high priority since you actually need to mine now, and everyone is getting their mega salvagers going.

remember i said that turning beams off doesn't affect the lag, so reducing the size shouldn't either
