Does anyone know what's needed to max out this game (What hardware and which settings?) Or is maxing out this game not possible right now due to lack of optimization?

Maxing out the settings unless you know what you are doing is a sure fire way to break your client. What's your hardware config? Someone might have a similar setup with working settings and most settings at max.

    Ok so:
    Intel i5 3700 series (Desktop)
    nVidia Geforce 660ti
    16gb ram (I'm assuming DDR3)

    So aircooled /watercooled?
    Motherboard make and model?
    OS and edition?
    Java and edition?
    And internet bandwidth/known issues?

    A ton of air cooling,

Asus z77 or something, it was a 150-200 buck one I think a couple years back, not sure where box is...

    Win 7 64bit

    Java, both editions.

    no internet bandwith issues.

Maxing out the settings isn't that great atm, there's a bug with occlusion culling for one thing.

I can max most things but when I switch on bitmap I get a ton of lag, and if I use frame buffer the game won't even launch.

Occlusion culling glitches can sometimes be hardware specific, do you have an ATI card per chance?

SKC if you are looking for a "how pretty can i make this game" then try the following.

    Texture pack, Default @ 256
    Shadows : ON @ Ultra
    Normalmaps : ON
    Procedual background ON @ 4096
Max Segments : High as you can go.

All of these things will cost FPS. So i'd advise incrementally trying each one in stages.

Occlusion culling / VBO bullk mode are performance options, if you experience glitching entities or broken textures try adjusting these.
Glitching structures is probably a Occlusion culling bug from hardware compatibility, if everything looks "broken" make sure VBO is ON, or restoring to a default value. 4mb. (if those are true, try but didn't help, try off).

Shader mods, these alter the stars ingame. however they both require frame buffers, so if you are unable to run with frame buffers these will not work.

AFAIK VBO bulk mode has to be on now, otherwise the game crashes. Why is it still a setting?

Yea, it does usually. Unless i mis read, some guy had to turn it OFF to run SM the other day though.

    Thanks for the input.

Do you know if allocating more ram would alter FPS values? Or is that based on the processor and graphics card?

Like, setting the max memory at 4gb instead of 2gb, or at 8gb instead of 4gb?

Also, what should the Initial and Early Generation Values be? I can't find information on them.

I'd probably leave early and initial memory values as they are, increasing the maximal ram to 4 or even 8gb would probably benefit. But i'll let someone who can answer that from first hand experience correct me :)

Just double check you are using 64bit java. The amount of people that get errors and problems purely because of that is phenomenal :)

I have both installed so I can use 32bit java programs also. Does that matter?

You'll soon find out when you set your Maximal memory to 4gb :D

If it runs after increasing maximal memory, 64bit java is being used. If not, then you'd need to talk to someone more knowledgeable about forcing the Jar to run on 64bit not 32bit java. Sorry i can't be of much more help.

As a reference I can run the game with all of the settings that kupu said minus the extra shaders at around 30 FPS on a planet with a few stutters. Here are my Stats.
    OS: Windows 8
CPU: AMD 8 core 3.5 GHz
    GPU: AMD R9 270
    RAM: 8GB Ballistics (2X4GB)
    Storage: 1TB Seagate HDD
    64 bit Java

However because of the stutters I normally turn down the shadowing. Occlusion culling seems to work fine on my card Btw. I also have StarMades memory set to 4GB. Not sure if It changed much but I had memory to spare.

    In addition to kupu's recommendations:
While working on some of my own textures I also found that turning off texture compression, and enabling the linear mag filter (in-game), made a very nice difference for close-up objects.

Setting procedural background to 2048 was very acceptable, and a noticeable improvement over 1024.

If all your desired settings slow down the game too much, start reversing the changes in small groups and play-testing in between to narrow down which changes you should reduce or avoid. Take a quick flight around some asteroids, a station, and maybe a previously generated planet to see the effects.
