In case you live under a rock, Microsoft just bought Minecraft, and the community is deteriorating fast. CPW (a big Forge dev) just left modding.

The MC community (especially the modded MC community) is desperately looking for blocky alternatives right now...

Schine, if you're reading this, take advantage of the drama! Please put Starmade promotion into high gear, our community is small and needs to grow!

    NO. Not yet.

For starters, the game is already green lit on steam. Secondly, the game is nowhere near the state it needs to be in for a publicity campaign. Last time we got such an influx was during the yogscast series (which was discontinued because the game was too buggy), and the game itself could barely handle it.

Side note: The Minecraft community has been dead for a while now. Microsoft bought minecraft while it was on its way out of the spotlight, something that I honestly don't understand. CPW probably left because there was nothing left to do. There is a point where there is nothing left; where any interest in the game is gone. If anything, that is what happened (his twitter confirms it).

Our community needs to grow, but at the right time. Rushing it will just put Schema in the place of stress that was 2013 (it was hell).

It might be nice to know what, if anything, Schema needs from the community to continue to move forward. Does he need funds, labor, game feedback, or just to be left alone for a while to get things done?

He literally needs nothing from us but our continued cooperation. Keep using the bug tracker, keep submitting problems you're having with the game, and most importantly be supportive.

It think that the big campaign will start when all the big features are implemented and sort of working properly (small balancing will come later). Schema will decide what is major, but I think that 'major' would mean the faction system, hp system, creatures, a better universe, capital systems, movement blocks, reduced planet lag (and lag in general), major bugs fixed, etc. It is unknown at this time what other major features will be implemented, but as it is right now, it is still going to be some time until this game is ready for a massive increase in players.

This is still in alpha. Major features need to be implemented. While the yogscast helped get this game get some movement, it was kind of dumb. It was in barely a game. Not sure if they realized what they were doing. Publicizing doesn't start till around beta. Games like dayz can get away with it because they are massive, require larger dev teams, and they need those numbers of players to report problems. This game does not really warrant that. Schema can implement lots of things pretty quickly. I'd even say faster than Minecraft could at times.

You think!!!!!?????? Seriously, this game got FTL in just three weeks, and the crafting system was implemented in just over a month. And don't forget the other things that were added really quickly.

Most of that is true... I'd just hate to see other voxel games absorb that massive user base that StarMade deserves.

    However...

Minecraft was NOT dead. Vanilla was declining, but thanks to the Bukkit fiasco and now the Microsoft acquisition, the massive modding community is just now in serious trouble. Some devs are already jumping ship, others have said they'll leave if the ship keeps going down.

Can you imagine what all that modding talent could do in a game like Starmade?

It may be too early to go into full blow marketing mode, but just getting the word out and telling those devs/players that StarMade EXISTS would help the game immensely.

Like what? StarMade and MC have very little in common at this point except for the visual style. The real kicker is the lack of a modding API. Most of the enjoyment from MC (for me, at least) comes from modded-in features.

If you're doing the same thing for more than two years as a hobby you start to get burnt out. This can be compounded by hordes of screaming children.

Literally absolutely nothing. There is no modding API for skubmade and there probably won't be for some time.

All it took last time was for some dipshit to email yogscast. Go ahead, see what happens. But you better be ready for the consequences.

Nope, minecraft is dead (to me at least). I literally had to install mods to like the game, and that isn't a really good quality. And when it took soooooooo long for mods to work again in the 1.7 update, I just gave up.
    (That's how I found starmade btw) :)
So I guess I should thank minecraft for being so incredibly dull. If it wasn't for mojang's mess, I would never have found the game, and that is something I really don't want to think about...

But seriously. Minecraft just doesn't broaden its horizons. It always wants to stay where it is. Even the new features that get added seem the same as the rest of the game.

What I meant with three weeks for FTL was that the update covering it only took three weeks. I know it isn't complete yet, but boy is it fun to zoom around (soon to be!!!!) galaxies.

I don't think Starmade needs much publicity, especially right now. I've said this before on some other thread, but I like the small community Starmade has. Everyone knows everyone else (almost).

Tinsy is correct. We are a rather tight-nit community. We don't want a storm of ppl because then....well lots will change community wise. (Especially if it's minecraft noobs demanding pigs and stuff)

    What @Comr4de said.

Adverizing the game too early while it is still lacking a lot of core features (such as proper AI fleet control) would be a bad move. Basically, there would be a massive influx, that's true, but not as many would stay after the initial hype is past.

The best is to advertise when the game is in beta, meaning that most if not all core features are ingame and working. That way it's possible to attract AND KEEP the largest amount of players possible.

In my opinion, there are going to be two points in development where a publicity push will be beneficial. One is a small push, which will be coming soon given the features which are said to be coming out in the near future. The other is a decent way down the road, when the majority of the big features are in the game.

This is not (as far as I know) what the development team has planned, but is something which I (as well as some others in the StarMade community) are gearing up for. @Bench has been in preparations for his trailer for awhile now, and I am in the stages of planning something as well.

As far as the "official" publicity push I feel that should be left to the developers, at least as far as determining WHEN it should be, as they know better than we do when the time is right regarding game-features/stability. That's going to be the big push, when the dev's jump in and help us spread the word. So in my eyes it will be a joint effort, we (the content creator community) will be the preliminary push, followed by a huge shove from the dev's.

And on that note keep in mind, if you want to help out but can't make videos, or don't want to, be on the lookout for things in starmade which really set it apart from other games. Or share ideas with others, content creator's are always looking for more ways to promote the game and show off StarMade's uniqueness!

minecraft is only fun for me with other people playing. If people keep posting videos of starmade then the number of people playing should increase slowly
