i think gates modules (if i got that right) could have a face like the thrusters that emit a kind of portal.

    [ ] = normal block
    [|] = effect side

Damit i hate my english some times

:) Your English is fine, i understand. It might be possible to have a 'emitter' type texture on one face (like the thruster), but things like this require the player to orientate the blocks to make them look right.

I'll add the idea to the list.

Gates should definitely have some kind of texture in the gate itself, like portals in minecraft. But this is starmade, so it should be more futuristic. Maybe it could be a slightly glowing, very light and luminescent blue? It should be see-through though, because otherwise players won't see what they are fly into.

As for the warp modules, I'm thinking they should look nice when tiled (because they will be used in large numbers). I think hey should be bluish, with a blue glow around it, so people can make special warp rooms. Maybe they could have a nice animation? Something pulsing purhaps, to simulate their short but spectacular task. It could be a very distinctive (perhaps purple) circle originating from the middle of the block and then rapidly going to the outside of the block, with a pause in-between the pulses.

FTL blocks should be more advanced looking than everything we have so far. Its impressive technology. Currently I think the most advanced looking things so far are ship cores and the shield modules.

If we are going to take it that far, we should then be allowed to connect the gate to a light to alter the color inside the gate.

If this is implemented, I hope the shader is written in a way which make it easy to adjust and understand by most who are able to open it in an editor and change a bunch of constants.

I still think that we should be able to make a gate without a loop, but eh.
I also think that if the team ever implement gate effects we should be able to change its color.
And then maybe also shields color. Then variations in warp color so it isn't always purple (maybe different colors/effects depending on ranges?)

@Vanhelzing said we need a particle emmiter block that has an option to reverse the emission flow so it sucks in the particles rather than spewing them out. I agree with him

We currently don't have our particle system up and running, so thats not an option right now.

    Quick question to you all.

Would a invisible block (much like the area trigger) be a solution to the "must be a visible loop" problem?

How do you feel about it?
There should be a poll on this in General Discussion if the devs want peoples opinions.
In my opinion yes yes yes yes please.

A gif-texture (4 pics, 1 each 0.5 seconds) could do the block-animation, but the function needs a shader (and code)

    EDIT 2 Ninjas: Kupu: 26-minutes :D

That would probably make much fancier and more diverse gates possible (Along with a few other things), but it would also result in the loss of one of the two balancing factors for gates - the required size.

Not really. Just do something like with docking modules - check ship size.
When the ship is above 0.8* a gates loop size, energy costs could increase exponentially for a soft-cap near the size limit.

Ships which are just tall with almost no mass for their vertical size could still use the gate if they are bigger (just the core needs to fit through), but drain more energy on it than on gates which are built for their size.

But personally, I am satisfied by the mass limit (storage) because that defines the value of a ship more than it's size (just limits RP ships while not limiting doom-cylinders of the same mass)

I mean, the loop will still have to be a certain size, it just won't be visible. I say yes, in case someone wants to do an open gate.

On one hand, it would be great for builds. Having a transparent block for the gate means we do not need to design gates that cover it up or are entirely closed. On the other hand, taking away it's texture takes something away from the game in my opinion. It's a very important block and suddenly its invisible. Not sure how I feel and I plan on designing opened gates.

Accelerators create a warp bubble around the ship for a determined amount of time. Gates create a wormhole.
