I'm just getting into this game. I want to make a large ship but the recipe for the basic grey armor blocks that you start with requires fertikeen capsules? Are there any ship hull blocks I can make with just metal mesh and crystal composite?

Unfortunately not. This is a massive mistake by Schine imo. You can use rocks and such but these lack the shapes of hull.

Glass doors do not take fertikeen but they are transparent so they may not fulfill your needs properly. They do function as actual armor however.

You of all people should know your wiki is not properly up to date, Duke.

A system where the wiki pulls the recipes directly from the most up to date version of the game would be a good idea.

Girder lacks shape diversity, but it is lightweight enough to make a suitable structure to a starter ship, and can be made with just mesh. Frankly though, getting enough fertikeen to make a lifetime supply of basic armor is really easy. A single large asteroid packs enough to make more hull blocks than your average cruiser will typically need anyway.

They do have a bot that does that. However duke/schema have the keys to it. Wish they would use it every update that adds/changes blocks.

Agreed. The basic requirements for resource gathering should require ONLY basic components.

Hull, power, thrusters, and salvage beams should all require composite and mesh, and nothing more. Otherwise you're locking some people out of being able to start out due to being in an unlucky area.

schema needs to update the bot, unfortunately. If it was run now, it would break the wiki. We recreated the wiki templating system so that it would be easy to simply run a bot to update all info. Just that bot needs to be updated.

Thanks for the info you guys. My first fertikeen asteroid didn't give me much fertikeen. I think it was either around 1,500 or 15,000 - I'm not at home to check.

There's no shortage of shops in my single player universe. What I ended up doing was selling some useless terrain blocks, which actually got me quite a bit of money. I was then able to fly around to shops buying out all colors of all basic armor blocks (around 3-4k per shop per color). This didn't even put a dent in the amount of money I made from selling terrain.

I feel like I'd need to buy out 20-30 shops to reach a million basic armor blocks. How are people getting into the millions?

We set up large scale factories.

Factory makes 1 item per tic. Every Factory Enhancer you slave to it increases the number of items produced per tic by 1.

A factory with 999 enhancers makes 1,000 blocks each tic. Same applies to your capsule refinery.

So yeah, we make big miners, eat entire systems, and use mega-factories to churn blocks out 1k, 10k, even 100k at a time.

You can also make a HELL of a lot more money by producing finished goods to sell to shops as opposed to selling rock or raw mats. Even just a 100x or a 10x factory churning out weapon modules or computers will make you rich in no time.

You should not be building ships at that scale until you have a homebase and factories anyway. Once you have an HB, you can claim a sector which will give you a mining bonus. Then focus on getting some logistics chambers for your miner which will give you an even bigger mining bonus. With both bonuses in place you should be getting 10-100k ore per asteroid depending on asteroid size and what server you are on. Each ore produces 5 capsules; so, you only need to hit a few asteroids to get those 1million blocks, but you will find this very easy to do since you will need way more than 1 million capsules of other types to arm said ships with weapons and chambers etc.

To put this in perspective, Basic armor = 1 capsule. Shield blocks = 40 capsules. Weapon blocks = 50 capsules. Chamber blocks = 400 capsules... so as long as you are minging for everything, you should never run out of ferkin for basic armor unless you dump it all into more advanced armors or defence chambers.

If you are just looking for hull for a starting miner, then your are using way too much. Starting miners should be as small and cheap as possible. Even a "heavy" miner should be able to be made easily with what you can find in shops.

    Agreed.

To expand on this, whenever I play survival/multiplayer, I set out to mine every asteroid I can find then sell what I collect in 3 stages.

Stage 1 - Just starting out: We all start out flat broke but a good first way to make money is by selling the asteroid color blocks (Larimar, Dolom, Cinibar, etc.) When the shops max out and won't accept anymore, use your factories to make "Carved" color blocks (Carved Dolom, Carved Larimar, etc), Then you manufacture and sell capsules of the same materials until they max out. The reason you do this first is because in the beginning, every resource counts and you want to build your industry as fast and as large as you can.

Stage 2 - Have some money but low tech: Focus solely on industry by building as many factory enhancers as your power plant can sustain, connect them to your refineries and factories, then sell the rest to the shops. When they max out, build and sell factories (all variants) until they max out. By now you should be swimming in cash. Just remember to keep plenty of storage on your home base to fit your refined resources and finished products.

Stage 3 - Getting serious: You've got the cash. You've got the industry. Now it's time to follow Edymnion's advice and go all Unicron on EVERY ore-bearing rock you come across... Omm nom nom...

Edit... Also, follow Nosajimiki's advice; especially the part about logistics chambers. They will pay off sooner than you might expect.

I normally start by placing a faction module on a small planet then claiming the system to get the mining bonus.
