If you could add/change/remove one thing in Starmade, what would it be?

and then Schema would end up implementing something that has extreme performance problems
I beg to disagree, why would Schema do that? Half their work is optimizing the game lol, trashing performance would be a cardinal sin for them.
Considering what the game is, it has amazing optimisation.
If they don't work with the community bothe the game and community will die.
Certiantly in a rough patch atm, but theres no way theyre just going to listen to something just because 50 people have said it lol.

Just look at Stabalizors, there has been a horrible backlash against them and yet development for them just gets increased and the mechanics more convaluted and less desirable XD

Unless of course you were making a joke, then nice joke bro!

You're saying that if the community decides they want something that is very bad for performance, Schema should ignore the community?

What if the community decides they want something that is bad for profit/sales; or would take far too much development time; or has legal issues (patents, whatever) - Schema should ignore the community for those cases too?

There's working with the community (e.g. a dictatorship where the dictator has some kind of advisor that that gathers and summarises feedback); which is mostly what we have. Then there's attempting to achieve consensus (e.g. a true democracy where everyone has a say in every decision), where Schema spends all day arguing with shit-posters and doesn't have time to touch any of the code.

I'm not saying that the way things are now is ideal - a little more communication between the community and developers would be useful (and not just developers listening to the community, but also the developers providing more information to the community - e.g. there was another pre-release recently and nobody has any idea what changed), I'm just saying that "listening to the community" can be far worse.

Role players said "we want to force everyone to have space for crew", so the developers listened to the community and created "power 2.0". Then the community said "LOLs, we don't want disconnected blob ships", so the developers listened to the community and added reactor streams.

I mean, you have to admit that there's at least a small chance that maybe the community are morons? ;)

Or maybe the mechanic is bad.

Like some people said "want space for crew - add crew quarters".

I would like to see the new power system replaced with something that gives a lot more option for power sources.
I want different power sources like solar power, hydrogen fuel cells, chemical rockets, fission, fusion, and antimatter.
That would give a lot of options for powering ships with varying costs, fuel requirements, and risk of exploding if damaged.

The solar power could work well for smaller ships, so you don't need to worry about fuel.
A fission reactor could power a ship for a very long time between refueling.
Antimatter could power a giant super weapon, but would be very expensive and hard to make.
I agree with this so much. Having different types of Energy would be great. Nuclear Reactor powered Mother ship or just small miners powered by Solar Panels, would make sense and add more variety to the game.

It's more like the devs and us are two friends at a dart tournament.

The goal is pretty simple, and both us and out friend (the dev) agree that you can achieve your goal by hitting the dart board.

So out Dev friends line up a shot, but then miss.
"Better luck next time Chap, let me help guide you" the community says.

You help them line up the shot, but then they miss again and only hit the edge of the board.
The Devs then pack up and get ready to leave....

"Wait" you say, but you didn't acheive your goal.
"We did" they say, "We hit the board, It's good enough".

"Just hitting the board wasn't very entertaining and no ones going to come watch you next time" we say.

The devs then run up to the board and smack it with their face.
"There" They say. "We hit the centre of the board. Can we go home now?"

"No." Says the community. That was self destructive and will not help you achieve anything.

"Fine" they say, and proceed to pull the dart board off the wall and begin rolling grenades at it.
"Have we hit the board now?"
    They ask.

The community cowers in fear and wonders what sort of messed up world the devs are living in.

A not so happy end to an otherwise adorable and productive relationship :, (

That's not even close to the chain of events that has happened.

Schema said he wasn't happy with the old power system, he wanted more thought to go into it then simply placing down rows and 3d "T's" then stuffing your ship with systems. With the goals set out, I imagined schine was going to develop a system that rewarded good engineering practices, and boosted your ships performance naturally (not as a direct result of game mechanics, but as art imitates life: good armor distribution NATURALLY makes your armor more effective than bad armor placement)

The new power system is a good start, hampered by the current way stabilizers unnaturally FORCE you to put space inside your design where none is desired for no reason.

That is why there is backlash. And that is why i currently prefer the old system, in the games current form.

Qweesdy you are correct that schema just bowing directly to the winds of community opinion would almost certainly be bad, but it is not because The Community is stupid, it's because there are a variety of different philosophies within the community, it's not a coherent, persistent group consciousness. So sometimes the most popular ideas don't even work well with each other because the support groups for each idea aren't identical.

IIRC, the primary issue that set off power 2.0 was not community demand to force interior spaces at all, though apparently that was a major consideration in designing the new system. The main cause was that the old system was coded in a way that was repeatedly causing the devs problems with coding more advanced features and at a certain point it was decided that fixing this fundamental issue should happen before wasting energy trying to work around the old power while implementing new features.

So the shape the new power has was absolutely informed by listening to the community, but the decision to re-code power from the ground up was a technical necessity, not something caused by community demands.

I totally forgot this point. The devs mentioned it once in a blog. Somewhat counters the argument, that the new power was an unneccessary delaying addition.

If I could add one thing to StarMade, it would be actual gameplay content.

I forsee a swarm of fanboys mass disliking this post because I have dared to question their Schine-can-do-no-wrong narrative but here is why I would add actual gameplay content.

When I was first shown this game, I asked some mates who played as well "So what do you do in this game?"
They responded with "You build spaceships and shoot stuff"

I was interested, so I continue to inquire:

Can you land and settle on planets? "Well yes but they are too small to be usefully and they are laggy"
Can you fight in big battles with other players? "Yeah but currently most people will just hide in their homebase unless they know they can win"
So do you have to do stuff to survive, like replenish oxygen and stuff? "Nope, there are no survival elements in this game"
So can you do stuff with NPCs? "Yeah but dont really serve a purpose, they just sit there in the background"
So what about trading? "Most people dont want your stuff"
Is mining and industry any fun? "Nah, feels like a chore"

On and on I went, this was almost 5 years ago when I asked this question...

Yet in spite of more then 6 years of development and updates has the answer to any of these questions changed?

No, in my almost half a decade of playing nothing has changed, so if I could add anything to StarMade, I would add actual gameplay content.

    Of course not, lol

Everyone wants some content (or at least better ability to mod the game). Ain't no one out there sayin' to themselves "I hope they never put anything for us to actually do in the game!"

    Never seen that position once.

Everyone wants content, but not everybody likes being told anything that paints their Princess Schine in a negative light, seems I avoided the whiteknight squad today

I guess it's not always easy when you're fighting the good fight and beset on all sides by the forces of ignorance.

Me. I'd change the decision made some six months back to for all intents scrap the entire build system and redo the whole thing virtually from scratch. We had a good thing going for a while. It is gone, replaced by something I see as vastly inferior in virtually every way.
I feel this so much it hurts. Give me back a 3 dimensional power system FFS. How can anyone consider a 1 dimensional power system superior to a 3 dimensional power system?! It's inferior by design and that is a mathematical fact. The level of denial it takes to not see that? WTF?! Mind blown that the concept was considered for more then a minute let alone developed. You shouldn't have to tell an electrician not to stick his fingers in a live wall socket. It is "the sky is blue" level of obviousness to me... I. just. don't. get. it.

I don't know why I keep checking in here. Nostalgia I suppose. The game I used to love and have high hopes for is gone. I shall likely never play it again.

No single thing changed in this current disaster would fix it. They threw the baby out with the bathwater and replaced it with a skeletal homoncules.
    Amen brother.
RIP Starmade V1. It was wonderful while it lasted.

Issues with factions, shipyards, fleets should have been given more priority. It's all fine and good to say your going to fix these things in thier own time but when you put them off for so long you end up contributing to a creeping, cumulative misery for both server admins and players. It's one thing to have stuff like this in a closed alpha but with an open model it's shooting yourself in the foot.

I currently don't play because I login to see 0 peoples online from my faction.

I never used fleets because I have no real reason to play if I don't do anything with logic setups.
