I've had it happen as well. I'd appreciate a new thread, tag me in it. There is a small but annoying but that I run into (hard to track down) that requires a reboot and I'd love to see if that fixes it for you as well.
For a while now I have had this issue: Once in a while, usually after 1 or 2 months, this screen shows up after starting the game.

It usually happens after a crash but sometimes even after a normal shutdown. I made a post about this before but then the only sollution we found was reinstalling the game.

When/if this happens again grabs the entire log folder in the starmade install folder and zip it. Then post it here. Then try a full reboot to see if it fixes it. It use to happen a lot but some recent changes actually made it happen less.

I've had this problem before, and for me, it was due to sync issues between the Registry and the game(the world I was trying to create had the options on for protecting player accounts and it didn't go through for some odd reason). Resyncing my username to the registry from the Online Play menu allowed me to create worlds normally again.

It's an odd one, but might help if this happens.

I have the same error, as well. I lost quite a few man-hours of creative work when this happened. I tried the resyncing idea Snowtiger put forth but no luck. In all honesty, I'm mostly hoping to save a ship I had nearly finished that I had sunk many days of work into. Attached is the log file--"Universe 2" is the offending culprit.

make a backup of the folder
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\StarMade\StarMade\server-database\Universe 2
to make sure you are not deleting anything important.
then make sure in Universe 2\index\ are only those files
    Screenshot_4.jpg
also make sure their isnt a java.exe task still running even though the game was closed. (a pc reboot would kill that for sure)

try to start the universe again after you made sure only those 3 files did remain

I haven't had any more issues ever since (mostly because I reduced my play time to a minimum until the power update). Let's hope it stays that way. Thanks for the help anyway.

SmilingDemon - hey. I tried your remedy but it did not work. I even got extreme and tried this with a clean re-install of the game. It DID get further into the loading screen, so that was something. I'm out of ideas other than periodically copying everything to a flash drive as a poor man's backup. Thanks for the help. I do appreciate the feedback.

I did ask Andy about it. He suggest to delete floatingitemsarchive.ent and floatingitemsarchive.ent.old from the universe folder.

Only just getting in to this game, and would rather not lose all my work ><. Any help much appreciated.

Make a backup of your universe (usually in \Starmade\server-database\yourworldname)

then delete from the original universe under \Starmade\server-database\yourworldname the files
    chatchannels.tag
    FLOATING_ITEMS_ARCHIVE.ent
    FLOATING_ITEMS_ARCHIVE.ent.old
    TRADING.tag
    SIMULATION_STATE.sim
    FACTIONS.fac

you can delete one after another and try to restart in between.
i dont exactly know which file may cause it.

Yes, I started deleting files when it happened trying many combinations to get the game running, eventually I got it down to deleting:-
    trading.tag
    simulation_state.sim
    catalog.cat
    chatchannels.tag
    floating_items_archive.ent
    the related entity_ship*.ent
At this point the game started, and I was able to put the catalog.cat file back.

Seems to be running ok from what I can tell.
