Trying StarMade for the first time and already stuck just trying to get it to run. I downloaded the launcher from the website and have it installing the game into C:/Starmade as I saw that was recommended.

When I attempt to run Local Play I get a runtime exception and the first sentence of the error is "Something went wrong initializing the universe".

I have attempted to reinstall from scratch with no luck. I would be grateful for any suggestions!

there should be a logstamde.o.log file in the logs folder at c:/Starmade.
please drag and drop that into an answer here

    from yer log:
[2016-12-10 14:28:46] Caused by: org.schema.schine.network.exception.ServerPortNotAvailableException: localhost port 4242 is closed or already in use

[2016-12-10 14:28:46] java.lang.Exception: A StarMade Server Instance is already running on port 4242

Looks to me like you something is preventing localhost init, or that you accidentally ran 2 copies at the same time without noticing or setting them up right.

Try right clicking the launcher and "running as administrator" it MIGHT be DEP acting up, or an antivirus/firewall throwing a hissy.

    Aha! Thank you, DrTarDIS!

The issue was indeed a port conflict. The software for the offsite backup service I use was using port 4242. Once I determined that it was just a matter of stopping that service. I wonder if it's possible to choose a different port though?

For the record in case anyone else is troubleshooting a similar issue try the following steps (Windows 8.1):
    1. Open a Command Prompt window
    2. Type in: netstat -aon
    3. Scroll through the list and see if port 4242 is being used (under Local Address)
    4. If it is being used note the PID
    5. Open Task Manager
    6. Select the Services tab
    7. Sort by PID and find the number you previously noted
    8. If it's not a critical service, and it shouldn't be, right-click the service and choose "Stop"
Remember to restart the service later after playing if it's something like, say, your offsite backup. :D

I seem to remember you can chose the server's port in one of the config files. You MIGHT be able to choose it in the second launcher too, sadly I don't have time to give you a direct map to where, but hopfully farmers directions will get you where you need to be.

i couldnt find the port setting in the server config ... not even sure if it was in there

i couldnt find a way to change the singleplayer game port :/
to start a singleplayer game on a different port you have to first start a dedicated server on your system and change the port of it there.
    Screenshot_4.jpg

when that is running (small java server box on desktop) start the game through the launcher again and connect to that server
    Screenshot_5.jpg

the local play option is basically the same and using the same universe database ... it just seems to be locked to 4242

    open C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\StarMade\StarMade\server-database\world0\
    and remove
    chatchannels.tag and retry starting it
if it isnt working you may have to remove
    Catalog.cat
but that will remove the settings for all blueprints /enemy usable and ownership etc.)

yes ... there is a file broken that causes the load of the universe to fail. if you do not need the universe anymore you could continue with a new one ofcourse as a workaround.

Its also save to delete SIMULATION_STATE.sim i got told ... and then restart the game to see if it works again .
If it isnt then the universe is probably broken for good.

I also got a similar problem of unable to initialize universe. But I suspect it was caused by the game crashing while I'm designing a ship at my shipyard.

Is it possible to restore the universe by copy and paste all the files that are not corrupted?

What files am I supposed to delete in order to load my universe?

I'm getting it now too! NONE of my SP worlds work though MP is fine. I have tried all the fixes above and forced overwrite of all of the current files.

Starmade log attached and fingers crossed

i would suggest you do remove the catalog.cat file from that universe and try to start it again
make sure you do have enough disk space. probably got corrupted due to a crash or went wrong file handly otherwise.

    Code:
2017-02-06 07:56:31] [SERVER] NO DB CATALOG FOUND ON DISK: CATALOG; file: C:\Schine\StarMade\.\server-database\horizonrp5\CATALOG.cat; pathString: .\server-database\horizonrp5\CATALOG.cat

I did remove it, and all of the others you suggested. I cannot even create a new world. I can play online which is a relief but I was about to save a station I had been working on and lost several hours work!

I know sometimes worlds become corrupt but not beiang able to start a new one is irritating to say the least.

hmmm ... ok .. never ever had a corrupt universe. but maybe i do not use them in testing long enough for them to break.
did you try to force overwrite and updatethe game (never downgrade .. starmade isnt supposed to work then)
