Bug Fleet Mining not working?

    Created a new local game today, new fleet,


    No ship will mine. They'll float around, turning, spinning, ramming, twitching,

    Replicated on small ships, long ships, wide ships, tall ships,

    Core, Power, SVG Cpu, SVG mod, thruster, not-flagship,
    Storage, all connected, check check check,

    Works for me! I have two mining fleets. On MP I am using my Hyena drones and they have gathered me 90% of the resources I have in my inventory, in some cases MILLIONS of capsules! In SP I am working on some new, bigger, more powerful drones and they work fantastically! Try the Hyenas (in community content) and see how you go.

    Hi Splatthecat I will try these drones, mine just surround a roid and head butt it repeatly.
    Also they refuse to form idle formation unlike the non miner ships.

    But they have a mass of 54 where a 1k mass drone will head butt the roid.
    Its not working as intended thats for sure.

    I will check the mass of the bigger drones and let you know. They are skinned in standard armour and full of systems so they could be pretty heavy. I will let you know.

    Needless to say mining doesn't work for me either. There's something broken, or undocumented in there that prevents perfectly working drones before the asteroid update to function as intended now.
    The logstarmade.0.log has the following when I issue a fleet mining command on a single player local server:

    I've no idea what 'no target block found' means, the miner is almost in the asteroid proverbially spoken. ;)

    On the images I noticed a Bobby AI on your miners splatthecat, but afaik that's no requirement for them, or has that changed?

    UPDATE: well, splatthecat, I'm sorry to say your Hyena drones and carrier show the exact same behavior as mine did, move a little round an asteroid, don't fire beams and sometimes start bumping into the thing. Also the log shows the same as above when issuing a mine sector command.

    Since the update, my small mining drones that used to munch through an asteroid nicely barely make a dent in the new ones that is why I started working on the larger drones. After Ayelad and Jacemachine did some tests on salvage arrays I have made some modifications to mine but essentially, every version of this drone has worked.

    When I designed the Hyena Scavenger as a Day 1 salvager I decided to make a drone version and a carrier (made out of a basic version) just to show what could be done and if someone was at week 1 and wanted a scavenger and a fleet mining system they could have one and probably spawn one in pretty easily from what they had gathered.

    The Bobby AI on the drones is purely aesthetic and serves no other purpose as far as I am aware. The big drones don't have them at all.

    I am going to test my big salvager tonight. I think I have used it as part of a fleet and it worked but I'm not sure. It currently is set up with a lazy miner system but can be converted back. I will post my findings her later or in the morning.

    Well, I have the distinct feeling that fleet mining for you is more a lucky exception on the rule for most others that it just doesn't work. :(

    It's sad this doesn't seem to have any priority to be fixed while it's such an important part of playing a survival type of game.

    I don't know. I have used it successfully on a dozen single player worlds and about 4 or 5 multiplayer ones.

    I do tend to use the same drones but sometimes I just grab an unfactioned, abandoned salvage ship and use that. I may have to add a faction module and some storage obviously but it works.

    I know the fleets are a bit clunky and the combat commands do leave a lot to be desired but mining has been fine for me.

    I am going to do some tests tonight with some different salvagers and report back with my findings.

    so far my mining drones work as a fleet but they are not large(300-400 mass)and use a narrow mining beam(waffled 8x8x25l),they just need orders reissued from time to time.(these have been used on 3 different sp/lan worlds and 2 online servers),some say its to due to vessel size,center of mass and beam focus.

    So after playing around with this a bit... I have found some results..

    I built the bare minimum required of a drone, and sent it to mine... IT WORKED
    Then I began adding SVG mods and power blocks one at a time, then testing again...
    At about 15-16 blocks, it began to bug out. Around 30+ it stopped working entirely (just spun).

    So, my guess is this has something to do with size, but likely doesn't matter as it's obviously a bug and will be hotpatched away soon (We hope!)

    [edit: Was able to get my large personal miner to work as a drone (1000+ blocks) to my surprise. Then, I duplicated it via the shipyard, sent both to mine, and back to spinning they went. This bug's certainly unpredictable!]

    OK, I have just done some testing. I took my large salvager and converted it to manual. Admitedly it only has a mass of 615 and is only 48m x 15m x 36m so nowhere near the limits.


    I spawned in four in total and added my cargo drone as a "tender" and set them to idle in formation.


    I then spawned in four of my smaller drones, four of my Hyena Type D drones and four of my Hyena D1 Scavengers and set them all up in separate fleets with a cargo drone tender.



    I set the test salvagers to mine the sector and they all worked! I wouldn't say it was perfect as one of them did take a while to mine and then kept "thinking about it" before firing the salvage beams again. The other three worked fine but there was a lot of "searching" where the drone would fire and then sweep sideways so that the beam came out of the side of the ship. I think that is down to pure positioning as one drone just gently swayed side to side stripping away at the asteroid in clean strokes.


    I then wondered what would happen if I sent in multiple mining fleets! Yeah! Don't bother! My FPS dropped to 1-3 and I tried to take screenshots but none took! I don't know, but it looked like there are a number of "set" positions for drones to mine as they all tried to take up the same positions as the other fleets. It was hard to verify but it would appear that ships in fleet position 2 would want to go to the same point, position 3, position 4 and so on.

    Once I finally got things under control I did a final test. I seem to recall reading in the forums or seeing a video where it was suggested that smaller drones could be added to a fleet of larger ones as this would enable them to pick off the smaller fragments that the larger ones would miss. As I had a variety of sizes I thought that I would put this to the test and so added all of the other drones to the first fleet plus a couple of other Scavengers I had floating nearby. The asteroid didn't stand a chance!


    Just to the right in the picture above is my AutoMiner. I would love to test this as a fleet salvager but this has an automatic mining system too and I don't fancy relinking nearly 7000 salvage modules! It is also downward firing so it would be interesting if the AI can cope with this. I am planning on doing a refit of this ship so maybe I will try it before I connect the salvagers to the auto miner system.

    My conclusion? Fleet mining is about a carrier and mining drones rather than large salvagers in formation. The limit may be intentional rather than a bug? With the exception of my planet stripping AutoMiner, my largest salvager could be used as a salvage drone but I doubt that I would. Four Hyena drones have given me endless resources in a reasonable time. My larger drones would cut the time and I could make one a little larger and cut that time even further. I think it is over to the developers to confirm whether this is an intenional "cap" or an actual bug. In the meantime, I will continue to use and develop my drones that have served me well so far.

    You clearly aren't having the same bug we are haha, that's the conclusion I've come to. I believe your smallest miner is still larger than the ones I've been able to make functional. Again though, deleting server cfg seems to make it happy...

    Maybe. Sometimes I find it odd that people seem to have so much trouble with fleet mining and I can just throw a ship together and it works. Luck of the draw I guess.

    I can go to spawn on any server, grab a handful of abandoned salvagers and chuck a faction block and storage block on them all and set them to work.

    I am glad you have found a work around it sounds a nd maybe the developers will come up with a more permanent solution.

    I LOVE fleet mining and was so excited when it was introduced. My second ship on any new server is a mining drone and then a drone carrier.

    I find it strange because some patches I'll have the fleet mining issue and some I won't. I've got a fleet miner with 60 drones on it and they worked perfectly in older patches but now I'm lucky to get it to work at all. o_O

    For mining fleets to work, make sure you add damage computer + 1 beam to the salvage computer. This increases the range from the fleet, thus they'll be able to mine :)

    One issue I discovered is that having too many drones in the sector/fleet, actually will make them not mine. they will say that they're mining, but they're not. So it's best to keep under 20.

    Fwiw, because of this thread I deleted the server.cfg in my StarMade root install folder and that did the trick for me. ;)
