How can I make myself a member of a faction (single player)?

Yes, it's listed as neutral.

If you click on it in the diplomacy tab bottom left it should have an id (10001) most likely.

Type /faction_join_id Malacodor 10001
Then /faction_mod_member Malacodor 1

That should set you as founder.

Thank you, that worked. Actually it didn't work at first since I was logged in as Malacodor01 instead of Malacodor. The real problem was the wrong user name, no idea how that happened.

if it is one of the NSC factions .. do not leave it through the ingame faction menu.

that would either delete the pirate or trader faction then .. because they do have no members and you leaving them is causing them to get removed
