But as soon as you pull items out of that container, you lose the organisation into packets.

If your faction sets up a post-office system where smaller containers are picked up and delivered inside of larger cargo-spaces, how would you do it?
The trading guild AI could at some point get -modded or per default- that service.

I think 7x7x11 or 7x7x13 would be the most practical for large and small ships and feel most proportional.

    More prime-numbers! :D
At least it will fit into 15^3 comfortably.

A new thought: If containers stick to each other, you just need a "common multiple". One player uses 7, the other 11, you can have a storage-bay in size 77, or use 22 and have a single block wide empty space with 3*7

    360° in a circle … it was chosen as "common multiple" - of 90 (near 100), (being dividable by) 2, 3 (45, 30), ...

    60 minutes is also a common multiple of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10*6, 12*5, 15*4, 20*3, 30*2.

Why oh why do you want to standardize cargo ? What is the use ? Why do you want to restrict yourself ? And other ? This game is all about freedom in my opinion so why should we make things "standard" ?

    Waste of time.

The primary purpose of this would be for trade. The only standard I was looking for was for cargo pods, little crates that can fit inside or outside of a ship, with the hope that others can use it with no modifications on the fly.

I fully expect people to have their own cargo spaces and ways of handling it.

I believe any cargo container will work so I have no opinion on size or shape. I do put USD on my containers cause I have faith that the devs will fix the docking problem then my containers can latch onto anything that uses USD.

Another idea: maybe make it compatible with fighter/interceptor hangar bays!

A heavy interceptor should have warp-drive and space for 2 to 4 peoples + 2 light or 1 heavy turret. How large is it? This could define both your hangar size and cargo size.

Another consideration would be the size of most efficient module layout.
If we get a sweet-spot for Cargo + HFighters + DockedEngines + whatever, we have less options to vote for which it would be easier to get support from all.

I think it's important that we allow flexibility in design while still maintaining intercompatibility.
