This is possibly a driver issue when using OpenGL. Have you updated your graphics driver recently?

It could also be because it's an old / incompatible graphics chip. Could you tell us what it is?

I believe AMD updates drivers through the Catalyst, it should be automatic. However I could be wrong as I have never used it myself.

I've been doing some reading on your card / drivers, apparently the card is now considered legacy and unsupported.
    It's likely a new 64bit driver for windows 8.1 won't be released.

Rolling back to a earlier version of windows seems to be the most likely fix for this. :(

So... My computer had a nervous breakdown and I had to switch out the graphics card from an R9 270x to a R9 290. Somehow the WEAKER card had a driver that worked with 8.1 and Starmade but the newer stronger card doesn't?

    Any ideas?

upload the grafcisinfo.txt file please ... i would assume if it is the AMD drivers it is because of an install problem of the AMD software .. so maybe uninstall them, reboot and reinstall the latest version again

    Read this:
    Reference installation
This should fix it, as its most likely caused by a broken texture download, or outdated drivers.

In this case it should be the first one, if not, the logs will reveal the exact error. =)

I had this problem after a complete reinstall of the OS.

Turns out the cause was I forgot to install the drivers for my video card, and the system was resorting to using the basic windows video drivers which wouldn't handle it.

Soon as I installed the real drivers, it worked fine.
