You don't need malicious behavior to create such kind of situation, which I'd rather see as a real source of potential problems. There will be people who simply will want to make beatiful, detailed hulls or reconstruct some quality artwork they saw in all kinds of media - a thing completely understandable in itself but possibly a server killer.

Also, aren't we getting slowly off-topic with this?

I don't think there's much on-topic discussion left to have. We all seem to agree chairs and view-screens would inspire better interior Ship design, allow better control of a Ship's functions, create variety in combat tactics and considerably improve immersion all-round. There are only minor differences in how to implement the idea.

Personally, I'd like to see a new Chair block which can be sat in to "fix" a player to a ship but still allow them to look around while seated. The Chair can also be linked to a Ship's Core (and also linked to the Core of any Turret docked to the Ship) which would then allow remote control of that Core. The player still counts as being sat in the Chair for targeting/damage/ejection purposes. Simples ;)

However, unless someone has a development brainwave, it's ultimately up to Schema if and how any of this ends-up being implemented.

That's called being in your chair and holding right shift. :P

That kind of system could be abused to hell... Someone could spam Polygon Subdivide, or just load in tons of uber-detailed models until everyone's graphics cards crash. :p
OFC details would be limited. 4 high-map pixels per block.
Different blocks, different high-maps (high-maps with thickness)

Currently somebody can also create a very lag-sized big ship and let the CPU/GPU crash or not?

    Yeah, they could...

Sorry to dredge-up an old thread but, just had a small brainwave. How about 3 types of "Chair"?

    Bunk
When occupied, it places the Player in a supine position. Fixes the Player in place relative to a Ship/Station but still allows them to look around. Sets the current re-spawn point for the player (replaces the function of the Undeathinator).

    Chair
When occupied, it places the Player in a seated position. Fixes the Player in place relative to a Ship/Station but still allows them to look around. Can be linked to the following blocks:
Ship's Core - Allows remote control of the piloting functions of the Core (i.e. Flight Mode only) making it into a Pilot's Seat.*
Weapons Computer - Allows remote control of the Weapons Computer, making it a Tactical Station.
Docking Module - Allows remote control of the Core of any Turret docked to the Docking Module, making it into a Gunner's Chair.

    Engineering Console
Can be linked to a Ship's Core. Allows remote control of the construction functions of the Core (i.e. Build Mode only).*

*I'm thinking the Ship's Core should not be enterable directly
while a linked Chair or Console is already occupied.

All of these items have a practical purpose as well as an aesthetic one, and should promote the creation of functioning interiors and cooperative crew activities. What does anyone else think? :)

That actually sounds like a great idea, Blodge. (Also, thanks for the bump. I wanted to do it myself, but sadly I was the last poster so any attempt by me would look suspiciously like... what it is)

Thank you. And happy to be of service :)

I'm not sure about the idea of the Engineering Console. While I love the idea of a Player being able to be an actual ship's Engineer, I don't know if the ability to repair your ship mid-battle might be a bit over-powered?

It can already be done with Build Blocks aboard your ship, which are just an uglier version of the same thing.

Oh really? So a Build Block attached to a Ship allows a second Player to enter Build Mode, even if the Core is already occupied? Does it not confuse the game if both Players enter Build Mode for the same structure at the same time?

It's a bit glitchy, I think, but a glitch is a glitch, and can be fixed. You're supposed to be able to have two people in build mode at the same time, but it doesn't always work.

Ah, did not know that. Thanks for the info :)

Unfortunately, it does make everything I suggested apart from linking Chairs to Cores and Turrets practically redundant

Naaaah. You should have to sit in a chair to use a Build Console/block/whatever, rather than just disappearing into it.

Yeah, I agree. I want this game to be visually as convincing as possible (in it's own, slightly cartoon-ish way). Allowing Players to dissapear into Cores is something I think should be kept in order to make small ships still feasible, but otherwise the Player should be a visible entity at all times. A ship should be a ship and not your avatar.

It isn't that hard to have a 2x2 space in your fighter for a player to slip into... So IMO disappearing into cores is unneeded.

Indeed. All of my small ships (with the exception of my "escape pod") have been designed with exactly that, in the hope that someday I'll be able to put a chair in the gap. A Man can dream...

Haha... My small ships are basically empty boxes with a core column in the middle, windows, a console or two, and engines and a shield generator in the back. I've never made a fighter in my life since they seem so... useless.

Or they could just add a bit a power block stat to the chair (assuming it takes up 2x1 space). There is not a single ship that isn't going to use a power block anyways and I don't see a reason to punish players for wanting to actually be inside of their ships.
