Recent force recon patrols have encountered a series of unknown contacts bearing similar signatures working in concert with one another. The Office of Strategic Intelligence has issued surveillance directive WHISPER DAWN. The first results of this directive have culminated in the identification of a new class of vessel, designation Alpha.

Phantom vessels deviate from our concept of a spacecraft. While they possess internal compartments clearly designed to grant access to the systems within, there are fewer than we would expect. We can only detect access to the control systems and the power or shield systems. Every other subsystem is contained within the structure of the craft. We conclude that these ships rely on an exceptional degree of automation, to the point that several analysts have commented that these ships are more akin to an organism than a machine. We currently do not have enough information to verify whether this is a valid assertion, but it is worth exploring. If true, it suggests that the ship is either a self-sufficient artificial shell housing an alien sentience, or is a form of machine life.

Observation of the Alpha class shows it to be an offensive vessel, akin to what we consider a frigate. It carries no point defense weapons, instead relying on other ships in their formation to provide coverage. Its weapons system consist of a powerful spinal thermal beam cannon and two turret-mounted thermal beam cannons. We have identified two distinct weapon patterns among the Alpha-class vessels observed:

• Star variant: The turrets on the Star variant are pointed directly outwards, forming a wing-like protrusion from the craft. These turrets have hemispherical fields of fire, allowing it to engage targets in any direction.
• Talon variant: The turrets on the Talon variant are more conformal to the hull and have a limited field of fire, focusing its weaponry down the spine of the craft and making it vulnerable to flanking maneuvers.
