Description:
The Patriot-class destroyer was, at one time, the pride of the Nine Colonies fleet. First launched in 2082, it represented the height of frontier technology and engineering know-how, with its multi-gigawatt molten salt reactor, advanced barrier field generators, and state-of-the-art electronic countermeasures and long-range sensor technology. Seventy years later, it is woefully outdated and under-protected for a ship of its size, but still packs a fierce punch. The Patriot-class Destroyer is typically crewed by 160 personnel, which is quite few for a destroyer, and one of its strengths. The ship's four massive engines are fitted with thrust deflectors that can vector the exhaust plume for rapid rolling and pitching, or even reverse thrust if closed completely, allowing for extreme agility.
The main gun is a HEVAC, or High Explosive Variable Automatic Cannon, a mass driver that launches powerful explosive shells that rip through hull plating like a hot knife through butter. The secondary ion beam arrays pierce shielding from afar, rendering the enemy vulnerable to the cannon. The ship's twin rotary missile launchers are capable of pounding ships and stations alike into a fine powder with just a few salvos, and if that isn't enough, then the four heavy turrets will certainly finish the job that the rotary missile launchers started. The Patriot-class Destroyer's sizable net of 77 CIWS turrets provides a nearly impenetrable defense against anything but the most determined missile salvos. It is equipped with a basic salvager for hoovering up the wreckage from defeated foes, denying them valuable resources and adding to your own. It also has a storeroom with an automatic item sorter that sorts all the important things, including every color and grade of hull and crystal armor.
The shuttle landing pad and radio mast have strobing lights that are activated from the CIC, the side airlocks have retractable umbilicals for docking with stations that are extended and retracted from within the airlock, and the nav lights on the sides of the bridge can be toggled on and off, cargo pads jettisoned, and blast shields over all the windows activated with three controls on the nav deck.
The ship's interior features a command deck with main control room, weapon control rooms, a mess hall, storeroom, electrical transformer/mainframe room, reactor control rooms, engineer's lounge/shuttle pad control room, captain's quarters, point-defense control deck, crew's quarters, workshop, infirmary, nav deck and CIC.
After the fall and dissolution of the Nine Colonies, this particular example, DDG-42, the Toledo, fell into the hands of a group of privateers calling themselves the "Magpies", rumored to have links to the remnants of the Nine Colonies. Not only does it bear the logo of this organization, it has been modified extensively. Checkerboard flooring was used for the command decks, and the vessel's once spartan and cramped galley was converted into a Thai restaurant with plush sectional seating for forty people. These features by no means came standard on this class of vessel.
Like all Patriot-class Destroyers, the Toledo is equipped for long-range exploration, reconnaissance, command and control and interdiction duties.

Notes:
For a Destroyer, the Patriot is under-shielded, but boasts superior mobility with its 16% overdrive, 100% jump drive and positive thrust/mass ratio. It makes up for its weak shielding with a huge anti-missile system that covers all arcs, and it teeters on the brink of power-stability when jamming while in motion, making it difficult to detect except by eye or by scanner. In the right hands, it is more than capable of ambushing and destroying an unprepared Battlecruiser twice its size.
Its mobility and jamming allow it to keep any foe at arm's length, darting out of range of their close assault weapons. Should it be overwhelmed in combat, it always retains the jumpdrive as a fall-back option. The alpha damage of all the weapons fired at once is over 8.35 million against shields, which is more than decent for a ship of a mere 54k mass. Just one of the heavy turrets attacking a target on its own performs a deadly one-two punch with 468k ion beam damage and 421k missile damage. With your turrets active, be careful that you don't target a friendly ship and destroy them by accident.
